A young 3rd liner who has great potential at becoming a top six forward (and has since become one) is much more valuable than a 35 year old center who is currently putting up fourth line numbers.

The Flyers also received one of the most coveted prospects in the game in Brayden Schenn. They basically received two young players with strong top six potential for Mike Richards. Your proposal only had one of such players. (And I would argue that their value is less than what Schenn's was at the time of the LA/Philly trade)
