Considering he scored over 2000 points, being +518 isn't an example of exceptional defense. It's an example of scoring one more than anybody else. Gretzky would be on the ice for a lot of goals against but he would simply score one more than the other guys could. Essentially, the master of winning a game 6-5 which is exactly what the Oilers dynasty did.

You can't say playing great offense is amazing defense. Defense is the act of defending, not excelling at offense. It's about what Gretzky can do when he doesn't have the puck that determines whether or not he's an exceptional defender to which he wasn't. You can say he was so exceptional offensively that he didn't really need to play defense but that doesn't mean he was an exceptional defender. Bob Gainey was an exceptional defender. Guy Carbonneau was an exceptional defender.
