His list of 1st rounders while not terrible, I agree I would've liked to see more than just Vanek in a starring role for this team.
- twistedwrister9

We also only had what 2 top 10 picks since 1996 though.

I think Myers eventually will be more than just decent. Ennis I really like, so that year was a good draft IMO. I also have really like picks like Armia, Grigorenko, Girgensons lately. Even in rounds after the 1st, it looks like he got steals in Mcnabb and Catenacci. Just the makeup of this team as it stands right now is not good enough, which means he didn't draft well enough IMO 5 to 6 years ago

Goose was 2000? I did not know that, I thought he was same year as Vanek

I won't disagree that he had some "oops I crapped my pants" moments, but he has established himself as a pretty good GM at the draft table. Plus when someone improves at their job for a term of 5-6 years, he should be commended, even if it is just a little.

I think its way too early to call someone a steal of the draft until they at least play some meaningful NHL games.

What you see is the players you really like that were drafted recently have not yet had their hand play out in the NHL (lots of potnetial). The guys from 5-6 years ago have already defined themselves (not so much potential left). Don't worry, I'm sure there will be more mediocre talent that emerges than exceptional talent from the past several drafts.

I know, that's why I said looks like. Neither of them or in the top 50 prospects but they look like definite NHL talents. Catenacci is 12th in the OHL in scoring, he was a 3rd rounder.

I like both players. McNabb should realistically be ready to be a full time NHLer next year.......I hope!

"lack of leadership" I hear a lot of people use this term. Why are people so enamored with it? I’m mean, what role does it really play in winning games? I will take the highly skilled guy over a “leader” every time. Not trying to start an argument here just trying to understand why people keep calling out leadership on this team. I really belive it’s the lack of talent on this team. Who do you guys want leading this team? Most time I get answers like Towes, Callahan, Iginla and Brown. I don’t see leaders there, I just see really good hockey players. Get good hockey players here and I believe this “leadership” problem goes away
- jzabawaj

Excellent leadership typically comes with excellent performance (as a whole and as an individual). If you fail to realize the importance of it, you have never been on a high performing team (in business or sport).

Teams or organizations with exceptional leaders out-perform those that do not. Period.

Not always true. It helps having good leadership but its not the be all end all in terms of performance.

Exclusive: Flames fortunate Avs matched

Jay Feaster might consider sending Greg Sherman a thank-you note. Or perhaps a fine bottle of wine.

The general manager of the Colorado Avalanche appears to have inadvertently done the Calgary Flames a big favour by choosing to match the offer sheet signed by 22-year-old centre Ryan O’Reilly on Thursday.

In a bizarre twist to an already unusual story, Sportsnet.ca has discovered that the Flames were not only in danger of losing 2013 first- and third-round draft picks as compensation if the Avs hadn’t matched the O’Reilly contract, but they also would likely have had to surrender the player before ever getting him in uniform.

That’s because O’Reilly would have needed to clear waivers before joining the team’s roster. ...more...

I said this yeaterday, it was an inside job. They did COL a favor by offer sheeting him and matching the Same exact day. Colorado just didn't want to look like they folded their tent and caved into O'Reilly's demands

I was at the bar so I didn't get a great look at the re-run but did the first goal hit the D-man and re-direct?

1 G 0 A 1 Pt -3 in the last 11 games. Those are Drew Stafford-like numbers.
Although is those same 11 games, Stafford has 1G 3A 4Pts and -2. Heck, even Hecth has 3A and is a +3 in those games. So yes, in the past 11 games, I think he has been invisible.
