The faceoff is on as long as the ref doesn't whistle and tells you otherwise. As the player you should always go in with that mindset.

I remember when the NHL came back from their last lockout they wanted to speed up the pace of the game, and linesmen were told to drop the puck after a certain amount of time whether players are ready or not
