But my point was that the arbitrator isn't going to give him 6.5 million dollars unless he earns it. The qualifying offer is a different story. They have to give him that much if they can't extend him and use the qualifying offer to keep him under contract.
- Two_For_Truth

I get that, but even if he doesn't earn it, the number they are "reducing" from is still $6.5M. Even if he pulls a Gomez, they aren't going to cut his salary in half. PA would appeal and never allow it.

For sake of arguemnt though - even if they do go that hard in Arb to demand a magor decrease... well now you've just pissed off a player who held out once already, who's about to get a poopting salary (in his mind) and be UFA a year later, and you can't trade him (I think right? can't trade on a 1 year Arb award?)

They easily have the best group of young players and that hasn't changed. Just because they haven't won a Cup over night doesn't change that. Over time, the Oilers will have a far better chance at winning a Cup than the Flames do. It's not even a contest.
- Two_For_Truth

I agree that they still have the best group of young forwards in the league.. But MPS is a good example of high drafting gone wrong.. They should be doing better than they are with this group.

According to #Spotsnet 690's Andrew Walker, the #Canucks had also offered #Avs R.O'Reilly and offer sheet.

Can't sign extension until last year of contract, at that point why would ROR sign for a lower amount than the minimum he would get through qualification?
- Eliminason

Because an extension might be worth 20 million over four years whereas a 1 year qualifying offer would be worth 6.5 million.

Can't win a Cup over night in the West. It took Chicago and Los Angeles a few years to get themselves over the top. The Oilers haven't even begun to touch the UFA or trade market yet.

If ROR doesn't want to stay in Colorado, is it a wise move to sign an offer sheet?

If Colorado matches, that's it. He's playing for them. Yes, he would get the money he wanted, but that's got to be a pretty hostile place to play for two years.

That wasn't his problem. His problem was the money he was getting. He didn't care if he played in Colorado or not. He cared if he got 5 million a year to do it.

You don't think anything has changed between then and now? Like maybe a bitter contract dispute?

The more I think about this the more I think it is a bad move by Calgary and kind of a "no win scenario" for all parties involved. Calgary forfeits some high picks on what should be a rebuilding team, ties up a lot of cap hit in a guy that at this point isn't exactly a sure-fire proven guy (although I'm on record as saying I like him, which I do) and it's only a two year deal so he could do something similar two years from now or go to arbitration or whatever, basically they could potentially see him walk with no return. Even if you figure he sticks it out the four years until he hits free agency, four years of what? They aren't exactly Cup contenders with him. They aren't exactly Cup contenders with Crosby and Malkin.

For the Avs it sucks because they either match and have a disgruntled player they are paying big bucks for the next two years or let him go for a first and third when they probably could have got more in a trade for him (although that's on them as well for not working harder to get a deal done knowing the offer sheet option is out there).

For ROR it sucks because he's either stuck with a team he has no interest in playing for for the next two years or he's in Calgary...so...yeah. At least he's making lots of cash though, I guess that heals a lot of the wounds.

Nope. Subban got his contract and after a week everything was back to normal. For O'Reilly, it doesn't matter as long as he gets his money. If you want to argue the other Avalanche players might not want him around or might be disappointed in him, you might have a case.

In any case, Calgary has declared themselves to be buyers.

MacArthur, anyone?

And if Colorado matches, they'll be shopping Stastny without a doubt. Now we're talking.

How does that make any sense? They would lose a center with no immediate return and their solution is to trade another center?
- Two_For_Truth

If Colorado matches, there's no way they can afford Stastny with ROR and Duchene.

And I assume they won't be moving Duchene.
