Phaneuf is the Captain and should lead by example. He has not been fighting, the last two years and as the spiritual leader of this team, he needs to step up and send a message to the rest of the league. We're tougher, have the grit and come and get some......if your man enough. |

He missed Subban and caught a piece or Gallagher. They didn't result in goals but the terrible play he tried to make at the blue line did. - Arctic_AARDVARK
If it wasn't for Scrivens, it could easily have been a goal against. He gave the Habs really good scoring chances by either going for the huge hit and missing or by trying to do too much with the puck and giving it away. |

Because taking an instigator while trailing is the best course of action, ever. - Feeling Glucky?
If you want to play the "automatic instigator penalty if he fights" angle I could just as easily say that if Phaneuf fights Prust on the PK that Prust gets the instigator and the rest of the Montreal PP is negated. |

How often does Phaneuf break his knuckles or his orbital bone in a fight?
You want to weigh the consequences but you tip the scales too far to one side in a fight as if it's a guarantee he gets hurt if he fights. Phaneuf getting into a fight is no more risky than blocking a shot or shooting the puck too high near his teammates standing in front of the net. - Two_For_Truth
You're missing the point. Aside from getting hurt (which is all you seem to focus on), you take the leafs most experienced defender off the ice for 5 minutes. |

Not at all. I already said Phaneuf shouldn't have fought him on the PK. That would have been stupid. I don't expect him to fight him when his team is trying to kill a 5 minute PK. But as the captain of what is suppose to be a rough and tough team, he didn't do anything to spark the team and bring back the same type of aggression they had in the 6-0 game. A fight would have been a concrete example of trying to spark the team. And with the way he was playing, sitting for 5 minutes wouldn't have been that big of a deal because he was doing more bad than good with his play. - Two_For_Truth
I thought that this was the hole discussion was about.
and now you're agreeing with it.
I'm confused. |

Jesus Christ. Did you even ready what you wrote. Holy crap.
Toews fought Thornton who both happen to be #1 centres. Do not compare that to dion and Prust. Pure stupidity. Why would phanuef take himself out for 5mins for a scrub? Prust declined 3 other invites, but yet dion doesn't want to fight a guy 5 level below him while on a 5min pk and he's a wussy.
Pure stupidity.
Next time Crosby doesn't try to fight Rinaldo while he's on the pp will his leadership be called into question? - burn
Dion has to drop them in that situation. It is deflating and a sign of backing down. I'm not saying he should be fighting Prust, but if he doesn't he shouldn't be dropping his stick and squaring off first. You can play hard a drop eye contact to avoid the fight. He squared off and changed his mind. It is deflating for the team.
If he fights and loses his team's tough guys would even the score on the next shift that Prust hit the ice and it wuld have inflated the team. |

Pay me $4.5 million a year and I'll stay home and have some suicidal thoughts. Maybe.......do I want the Jag or the Porche......? Hummm.......I think I'll commit suicide over it, while I decide which puck bunny to bop! - PrinceLH
I dunno man, he makes a lot but what good is that when everyone hates you/is disappointed in you? I wish I could just say "(frank) 'em, let them think what they want but I got money!" but I wouldn't be able to knowing I didn't live out my dream properly. Honestly, he's still a hockey player and wanted to play in the NHL and be successful but never really got to. |

What if someone steps on the ice and cracks their head open??
Maybe we just shouldnt put him on the ice, because theres that off chance of getting injured.

Ideally, yeah, you have one of the tough guys take care of it but it wasn't happening. In a situation like that, you have to have somebody step up and take control. That's what a captain like Phaneuf should be doing. But he didn't. - Two_For_Truth
...prust looked like a the goofy meathead he is and just like any other dum dum, shouldn't really be given the time of day.
