He's making a legit argument tho. If the leafs are gonna be a tough team their captain needs to show he won't be pushed around. I don't understand the argument these guys are making. It's becoming a gongshow in here. Montreal embarrassed them on the scoreboard and with their work effort.
- Arctic_AARDVARK

Exactly. If the Leafs are going to be a rough and tough team, Phaneuf has to be the leader of that movement. When nobody else is playing like that, Phaneuf has to be the one who reminds them who they are. That's what the captain does.

Let me know when NHL.com has video of missing hits.

He gave the puck away at his own blueline on the 4th goal. Guess you missed that goal.

And yet he didn't. This is exactly why Phaneuf, being the captain and leader, should have stepped up at some point. To remind his team how they have to play to succeed.
- Two_For_Truth

one of the dum dums should take care of the other dum dum.....but like I said, I woulda been fine with Phaneuf dropping his mittens.

Reminds me when he backed down to Hartnell, last year, in a pivotal game, at the ACC, down the stretch.

I was just following your logic on "what if Phaneuf gets hurt fighting". You pretty much just buried your own logic.
- Two_For_Truth

You obviously don't understand logic. Half the time, blocking a shot is not even intentional. As for shooting the puck, maybe he should pick it up and throw it in the net, that way if it hits someone, they won't get hurt.

What you don't understand is that after you weigh out the consequences / rewards for dion fighting prust, that it simply is not worth it.

Ideally, yeah, you have one of the tough guys take care of it but it wasn't happening. In a situation like that, you have to have somebody step up and take control. That's what a captain like Phaneuf should be doing. But he didn't.

Your point is valid, but the timing needs to be right. Phaneuf should have not fought Prust, while the penalty kill was on, but waited and nailed one of their star players and see if Prust wanted to go then. He did neither, so he looks bad. Just like last year, vs Philly, when Hartnell challenged him, with the Leafs down a goal. Phaneuf wouldn't go with him and Leafs ended up losing the game 7 - 1 and fizzled out of the playoff race.

He missed Subban and caught a piece or Gallagher. They didn't result in goals but the terrible play he tried to make at the blue line did.

Why spark the team when you're the big, tough captain when you could just let the Habs walk all over you?
- Two_For_Truth

Because taking an instigator while trailing is the best course of action, ever.

You're right, we're wrong.

How often does Phaneuf break his knuckles or his orbital bone in a fight?

You want to weigh the consequences but you tip the scales too far to one side in a fight as if it's a guarantee he gets hurt if he fights. Phaneuf getting into a fight is no more risky than blocking a shot or shooting the puck too high near his teammates standing in front of the net.
