Look at the 2nd round in 2003 after we took Ryan Stone
- rival22

I know Erickson went next but shame on everyone for passing on Shea Weber 48 times in that draft

What he did is understandable, moreso than Talbot going to Philly. Reading Rossi's article, I don't think he understood that the decision to play out his contract (as opposed to signing an extension) would trigger a trade by Shero, as there was no way that Shero was just going to let him walk for no return. A bit naive on his part if that's the case. I think he'll always be well liked here, especially as time goes on.

For the boatload of cash Philly threw his way, he would have been foolish to turn it down. It just sucks that it was a rival like the Flyers.

wow...Ryan Stone (32nd)
Not only Loui Eriksson (33rd) but Patrice Bergeron (45th) as well. Amazing!

What teams do you find have the best scouts in the league? I'm sure we're not top 10..

I always refer to this as the "Thank you Philadelphia for drafting Mike Ricci and not future hall-of-famer Jaromir Jagr draft" That one decision swung the balance of power in the Patrick Division towards the Penguins for a decade. Thank you Bobby Clarke!

Yep, I remember my friends and I being excited to see "Jar O Mire Jay Gar"... or however else we pronounced it back then.... and the months long wait to get his 1991 Pro Set Series 2 hockey card

How many teams scouts and GMs have been in place since 2003?

Every team in the NHL passed those players up at least once. Its not a big deal.

It's fun to go back and see things like that, but yeah, like someone else said, when evaluating 17 & 18 year olds, there is a lot of room for error, even for the best scouts.

It starts to become a big deal when you blow up your drafts concomitantly. Calgary anyone?

Penguins showing a No. 1 power play with Letang and Crosby on points, Bennett, Neal and Kunitz up front.

I really like Bennett getting a look as a right handed shot, but to take Martin off #1 unit is blasphemy.

Amazing to see Nedved ahead of Jagr. He must have been a force as a youngster.

Well when the Penguins become the worst run franchise of the past decade I'll start to worry. Nitpicking drafts is a fruitless exercise IMO unless it is just for entertainment reasons and not actual analysis.

Nedved played a season in North America as well, so he was more of a known commodity at that point. Eastern Europeans and Russians rarely went in the first round until after that draft. I just went and looked at that draft Alexei Zhamnov and Sergei Zubov were also later round picks.

Eventually though, teams were drafting anyone with a Russian or Czech name...

that is ridiculous. they are finally developing a steady powerplay. why are they tinkering with it at all? and to have martin off is very foolish right now, and i have always hated crosby back at the point

I guess being 3rd in the league isn't good enough. Of course the way Dan mixes things up, that set-up will last about 1 minute.

Sorry Disco, changing something that is working really well makes no sense. Maybe you should work on how to play with a lead.

Nedved was already over here playing in the WHL I think. One of the big concerns with Jagr was if he could get out of Czechoslovakia or not.

Probably untrue, but there is the rumor of Patrick going over there with a bunch of cash lol.

I bet if you did some digging I would be on record as wanting Martin on the PP instead of Malkin at the point. For all of Martin's "shortcomings" last year I dont think the PP was one of them.
