What NHL player doesn't try to get the most money?

I don't think he would have a problem staying in Colorado if they offered him what he was looking for from the beginning. Is that being selfish? I don't know him personally so I can't judge him on what is being speculated.

They all try and get the most money they can. But how many players hold out behind unreasonable contract demands at 22? With one solid NHL Season under his belt?

He has put in four years of NHL service. This isn't a player who has played one season. I understand where your getting at b/c he's asking for more than what his worth says. If he is such a problem and not worth it than this decision is easy, take the picks.

Coming out of an EL deal and asking for the money he reportedly was...even PK Subban came back down to reality, since his demands were supposedly similar.

He's put in 3 years of NHL service, not 4.

No team has to put in an offer sheet. Obviously, the Flames feel he's worth that contract offer.

Sorry.

He was 18 and now 22. Hasn't played this year. My bad.

And kudos to both Montreal and Colorado for taking a stand. NHL GM's need to get player spending under control.

I did also but I counted his KHL by accident which was this year.

I'll have my editor double check before posting next time.

I heard it from his dad but not from him.

Not going to act like this is the first time a parent has said things before. We've seen it done here with #88.

Yep, and it ended up making the situation untenable over the long haul. Parental involvement caused as many troubles between the Flyers and Lindros as anything else.

Absolutely. It's crazy.

The kid had seasons of 8 goals (26 points), 13 goals (26 points) and 18 goals (55 points), and he wants 5 years/25 million? Nuts.

Flyers prospect Derek Mathers just got a checking from behind penalty that ended up being a 4 minute penalty.

It sent Daniel Walsh of the Ottawa 67's to the locker room

The Flames obviously want him and the Av's didnt want to pay him. So its pretty simple to me. Take the picks.

Great, him and Cousins should make for plenty of 5 on 3's.

Just last page you seemed to be advocating for the Avalanche keeping their young players together, even noting that the Avs had a low payroll and that the picks might not be enough of a return.

See?

I agree with your earlier post that 1st & 3rd may not be enough of a return. The Av's also have the 4th lowest payroll against the cap. O'Reilly is just 22 years old and IMO you try to keep your young talent around.

My opinion is to match. I'm a believer in keeping the young core of guys together if I'm Colorado.

All I'm saying is if Colorado doesn't want to pay him then they will take the picks.

Pretty simple.

Stop holding past posts against people. Sheesh - that's setting a dangerous precedent!

I might not be what they wanted, but it resolves the issue once and for all. They get what will likely be a top 14 pick, and don't face a contentious contract war in a year and a half.
- Jsaquella

yea you gotta just try and cash in when things turn sour with a good player like that. i'm sure they would've much rather traded him, but still the possibility that the return winds up leading to the better player

As I said before, I wouldn't be amazed if Colorado matched. Just pointing out you have to weigh all the factors-potential headaches in re-signing him in 18 months, possible hard feelings from his holdout, what signing him to that contract means for other young players on your roster(Gabe Landeskog, for example) and the fact that if you match, you can't trade him until one calendar year after you match-which could be beyond next season's TDL.

That means you have to carry him until he's a RFA again.

yea, i'm sure that was colorado's original intention. but i think sometimes you make a decision (hold tough on contract demands), bad things happen (like negotiations getting hostile), and then you kinda have to make the best of a bad situation.

i don't think anyone is arguing that colorado wanted things to get out of hand like this, but poop happens. then what can you do but move on?
