I wouldn't be amazed if they did.

I agree with your earlier post that 1st & 3rd may not be enough of a return. The Av's also have the 4th lowest payroll against the cap. O'Reilly is just 22 years old and IMO you try to keep your young talent around.

Hat trick in the 2nd. Nice.

It is the Islanders, though.

The biggest issues for me, if I was Colorado's GM are the relationship with the player moving forward(really nasty holdout, with the kid's dad writing letters to the papers) and am I facing another holdout in two years?

I'd hang onto their pick and if it wasn't a top 5, maybe I could package the 2 firsts into a top 3 pick and be sure of landing Jones, Drouin or MacKinnon.

If O'Reilly was really this big of an issue and lets say he's not worth the money than teams wouldn't target this guy. The fact Calgary is willing to go after him this hard tells me they think its a non issue. I'm sure other clubs have inquired about his services as well.

You certainly do try to keep your young talent around. But when a player is unwilling to sign a fair market deal, and start playing. It's time to think about moving in a different direction.

i don't think he meant that o'reilly's a bad guy....just that the relationship between o'reilly and colorado may be damaged beyond repair

The issue would be with the Avalanche, not with other teams. The talks didn't get contentious with anyone else. Nobody else named a captain where O'Reilly felt he was more deserving. There hasn't been a war of the words in the media between O'Reilly and any other team.

Fair point.

I honestly don't know what he asked for from the Av's (supposively $5M per year) but thats just speculation. I'm not his agent nor do I know what he wants.

I don't know the entire truth to these suppose stories. Only the Av's and O'Reilly know what is going on behind the scenes. Its all speculation.

The comments in the media from the father certainly makes things contentious. Calgary has no intentions of full rebuild mode, the Wideman signing this past offseason proves that. Feaster right or wrong believes in retooling as opposed to a complete sell off and rebuild. If there anywhere close to the playoffs at the deadline, no way Iginla gets moved.

The comments made in the paper by O'Reilly and his father are not speculation, they were made to reporters. O'Reilly's dad wrote a scathing letter to the Denver papers, which was published. That stuff isn't a rumor, it's a fact.

What NHL player doesn't try to get the most money?

I don't think he would have a problem staying in Colorado if they offered him what he was looking for from the beginning. Is that being selfish? I don't know him personally so I can't judge him on what is being speculated.

I heard it from his dad but not from him.

Not going to act like this is the first time a parent has said things before. We've seen it done here with #88.

I might not be what they wanted, but it resolves the issue once and for all. They get what will likely be a top 14 pick, and don't face a contentious contract war in a year and a half.
