Unless you're UG. Then you'd just be making it a struggle for the survivors to survive.

NCAA and AHL attendance is usually really strong.

I'm going with UG on this, Milwaukee could probably support an NHL team. In many respects that probably solves the problem in the central by pushing Nashville East into the Southwest. From there, Phoenix to Seattle. And then, instead of relocating markets to Canada, just start more Canadian Franchises. They're instant profit. They'd push revenue sharing without increasing the percentage each of the fortunate teams pay and thus allow all teams to turn a tidy profit.

If you were to create new Franchises, why not just offer MLSE the chance to own a second Toronto Franchise? Obviously, you could say it's a conflict of interest, however Rogers and co. could simply set up two different staff, one based in Markham and give each the budget and let them duke it out.

Open up another in Quebec. Quebec City is hockey mad for the Nordiques. The surrounding area is nuts for the various Junior leagues. French Canada is probably the most hockey crazed area of the country.

Expansion in Canada is a better idea than relocating. This allows the league to maintain the same amount of Franchises in the United States and gives a beneficiary to Canadian fans. I think Seattle and Milwaukee were good suggestions.

I also believe other locations would include Houston (Dallas was a good market, Houston has the same potential in a cheaper city) and a team perhaps in Virginia as an option for relocating. But relocating to occur within the United States make more sense than Canadian franchises created from relocation. You expand in Canada and grow the American Market in more wintery markets or markets (Like a possible one in Seattle) close to hockey crazy markets.

If the NHL plan is to keep Florida afloat because of snowbirds, it's not going to work. The attendance does improve but it's not going to save that franchise. The ticket prices are still dirt cheap. And the divisions are still stupid and uneven.

Columbus, a team the NHL is going to want to save, is going to get murdered in the proposed division. It's definitely going to get worse for them.

The solution is simple and it looks like this.

Western Conference

Northwest
Calgary Flames
Edmonton Oilers
Winnipeg Jets
Minnesota Wild
Colorado Avalanche

Pacific
Vancouver Canucks
San Jose Sharks
Anaheim Ducks
Los Angeles Kings
Phoenix Coyotes (Seattle Stickhandlers)

Central
Chicago Blackhawks
Nashville Predators
St. Louis Blues
Dallas Stars
Columbus Blue Jackets

Eastern Conference

Northeast
Toronto Maple Leafs
Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators
Detroit Red Wings
Boston Bruins

Atlantic
New York Rangers
New Jersey Devils
Pittsburgh Penguins
Philadelphia Flyers
Buffalo Sabres

Southeast
Florida Panthers (Quebec Nordiques) Another problem for another day.
Tampa Bay Lightning
New York Islanders
Carolina Hurricanes
Washington Capitals

A more radical realignment that includes divisional playoffs would be this.

Northern - The Original Six
Toronto Maple Leafs
Montreal Canadiens
Chicago Blackhawks
Boston Bruins
Detroit Red Wings
New York Rangers

Atlantic - Patrick Division
Pittsburgh Penguins
Philadelphia Flyers
Ottawa Senators
Buffalo Sabres
New Jersey Devils
New York Islanders

Central - Smythe Division
Calgary Flames
Edmonton Oilers
Winnipeg Jets
Minnesota Wild
St. Louis Blues
Colorado Avalanche

Southern - Calder Division
Tampa Bay Lightning
Florida Panthers
Nashville Predators
Carolina Hurricanes
Washington Capitals
Columbus Blue Jackets

Pacific - Campbell Division
Anaheim Ducks
Phoenix Coyotes (Seattle Stickhandlers)
Los Angeles Kings
San Jose Sharks
Dallas Stars
Vancouver Canucks

Regular Season - Every team starts the season by playing the 24 other, non-divisional opponents twice. Once at home and once on the road. That equals 48 games and guarantees everybody plays each other at least twice every season. Once that is complete, every team plays each divisional opponent six times. In total, that creates a 78 game season. To reduce travel, every team will embark on three sets of 8 game road trips as well has host three sets of 8 game home stands. This allows teams to reduce travel and eliminates the need for teams to travel back and forth unnecessarily.

Divisional Playoffs - Top four teams in each division qualify for the divisional playoffs for a total of 20 playoff teams. This helps supplement the 4 games lost in the normal 82 game season as well as expand the playoffs. The first round is a best of 5 series played 1 versus 4 and 2 versus 3. The second round is a best of 7 series.

Stanley Cup Playoffs - Each division champion is seeded 1 through 5 based on their regular season point total with traditional tie breakers being used. The 4th and 5th seeded team would play in a best of 3 series to gain entrance into the semi-finals as the 4th seed.

To accommodate the idea of a Toronto versus Montreal Stanley Cup Finals possibility, this would have to be different. The division champions would have to be seeded 1 through 5 and the final three seeds will be given to three teams with the best regular season record but who lost in the 2nd round of divisional playoffs. This creates 8 spots to challenge for the Stanley Cup and at least allows the possibility for a Toronto vs. Montreal Cup final. The third, fourth and fifth round are best of 7 series.

I think your division breakdown makes sense. I don't think the 24 non-divisional games followed by divisional games or everyone doing long road trips is possible, simply because it reduces scheduling flexibility in a big way, and the NHL schedule is as much about the Raptors and Stars on Ice as it is what be interesting for hockey fans. They have to work around that.

Having said that for me Detroit being back the East simply has to happen and I'm excited for it.

One thing I wish hockey would do more of is home-and-home series, or even the odd three game set between the same teams. Even playing two in a row at one building, stuff like that. It would build hate and reduce travel time somewhat.

Great, if more teams are always better, no matter how unsustainable, then let's just go up to 48 franchises. Or 72.

Two conferences of 36.

- Leeman4Gilmour

Yeah, let's start wildly exaggerating! How about we contract back down to 6 teams?! How's that for a crazy exaggeration that proves jack all?

The NHL has 30 teams. It's never going to be less than that. If they fold two teams, the NHLPA loses 60 jobs and the NHL has two owners who lost hundreds of millions of dollars. It devalues the other franchises, it loses player jobs and it doesn't benefit anybody involved.

Contraction is just as illogical as expansion. The only thing that makes sense is relocation. The owners don't lose hundreds of millions of dollars, the players don't lose jobs and the NHL can actually get stronger by being in better markets.

Huge opportunity for a highly chocolatey win tonight. It's a follow-up to the statement game in Montreal, it's a chance to pull closer to the top of the conference and keep the gap between us and the 9-hole solidified, it would move us above .500 at home, five games above .500, and would clinch the season series win against Les Crapitants.

The NHL should be more like soccer in Europe.. Have Leauges in each country. So Canada, US, Scandinavia, and Russia/rest of Europe would have their own leagues.. Then have a championship round playoffs

The longer road trips actually make more sense because the teams don't have to go on the road for two games then go back home then go back on the road. Imagine a trip from Vancouver to Florida to Detroit, back to Vancouver then to Tampa Bay then back to Vancouver. It's a ridiculous amount of travel. By having longer road trips, you get as many teams out of the way as possible and reduce having to go back and forth all season long.

Having said that for me Detroit being back the East simply has to happen and I'm excited for it.

Home and home series just increases travel by forcing teams to go back and forth unnecessarily. Unless it's a home and home between Toronto and Buffalo but not all teams are that close to each other.

North American teams would win pretty much every time. They'd make more money and could attract better players.

Unless you're talking about having nationality restrictions on the teams.
