Shattenkirk is much better than Carle and is also younger. He's already a top pairing guy and would/will be a #1 defenseman if not for Alex Pietrangelo getting that title.
- NickTheKid87

So was sutter....now he aint doing poop without weber....Shatts is a by product of pitrangelo ...

And there's a chance Shattenkirk doesn't become any better than a less injury prone Meszaros once he is no longer paired with Pietrangelo.

I can definitely see Holmgren going hard after both of these guys a la Weber this summer.

- phillydentist

He is already better than Meszaros was at the same point in his career. Mesz put up points right after the lockout when scoring was up and he was playing on a Senators team with an extremely potent offense.

It's a steep price. Not sure how the Flyers are going to be able to get their hands on a young top pairing guy.
- PLindbergh31

They'll have to move assets, but I think if they mov Couturier, it'd have to be for an OEL type guy. Shattenkirk is good, but he doesn't have that kid's upside

Two top ten draft picks are a tough pill to swallow especially considering Couturier is looking to be a steal. The #1 pick could be a lottery again with some high end prospects. Not sure id do that deal.
- Stinkfitz

I don't think the Flyers are going to got a top 10 pick this year. Pretty much the worst case scenario would be to miss the playoffs and pick outside the top 10. Unfortunately, I believe that is what will happen.

Offensively I believe they will be similar, but OEL has a huge advantage in size and two way play.

I don't think so. Shattenkirk has played well since his career began a few years ago in Colorado. Pietrangelo was not at the level where Shea Weber was when Shattenkirk first arrived in St. Louis.

In hindsight, I guess I wish they made the proposed trade for Weber.

No reason to move Couts or B Schenn for that mattter unless its for Weber in the summer IMO.

Shattenkirk is good, no question. He's got 150 games under his belt and other defenseman have posted up similar stats and mins in their first 150 games. See Meszaros's stats. He played top pairing mins for Ott his first 3 seasons and played great too. Maybe Kevin Shattenkirk becomes a Norris Trophy winner someday and maybe not. But don't assume he already is.

Nick didn't say anything about a Norris trophy in his post.

You better believe we need to keep Danny B on the Flyers forever, then.

Both Schenn & Couturier was too much. But I'd have been Ok with one or the other going.

Do you think its harder to trade B Schenn after they aquired his brother? Kind of thought it would have been odd to ship him out for Weber right after getting Luke. I was kind of against trading either of them because i thought nashville was going to just take the picks. Unfortunately i am usually wrong in these type of scenarios.

Weber is arguably the top dman in the NHL in his prime, it would have been a huge price to pay, but I think I would have seriously considered it. Basically they would have turned Richards and Carter, into Voracek, Simmonds, and Weber. When you view it like that, how can you pass it up?

That's just an assumption on your part.
