Okay, so don't shoot the messenger on this one, but you asked, so I'll tell you what I've heard.

A few years ago, a certain d-bag Toronto sports writer (not naming names, but you have all heard of him) wrote something in his column to the effect of "The Flyers would love to retire his number, but they don't feel right honouring a guy who died drinking and driving. But the team knows the real story."

I had no idea what he was writing about, but I had a friend who worked with this cetain d-bag writer, so I asked my friend to get clarification.

According to this d-bag writer (again, don't shoot the messenger) Lindberg used to drive home drunk a lot. But the Flyers (and remember: it was a different time) used to think it was hilarious, and never worried because Lindberg had such fantastic reflexes, being drunk behind the wheel wasn't a problem.

On the night of the accident, Pelle was at the wheel, and was driving at a fast rate. He had two passengers - a male and a female, and the female was terrified. So terrified that she grabbed the keys and turned off the engine, not knowing that it would lock the steering column.

So "the real story" is that "it wasn't really Pelle's fault - just a horrible accident."

I have no idea if it is true or not, but it does come from a pretty good (albeit dbag) source.

seems ironic posting this in a Bill Meltzer thread

I had never heard the story of the woman grabbing the keys but did hear he was prone to drinking and driving.
- JoeRussomanno

That wouldn't surprise me. The accident happened around 5:15 am iirc, that is a long night of drinking. The team went from Bennigans when it closed at 2am to the Coliseum and stayed til 5am.

I've actually heard that story, through non d-bags.
- Jsaquella

And now you've heard it from me, so you've got the d-bag thing covered, too.

i agree with this somewhat. crosby is many more times mentally ahead of malkin. but just due to his size, malkin should be able to do more things. imagine if he actually used his wingspan to play proper defense as opposed to just taking retaliating hooking penalties because someone stripped him of the puck. and he has a hell of a heavy shot that crosby doesnt. so while like all of these other arguments its all relative, i think malkin is more physically talented but not necessarily better
- stayinthefnnet

I see what you're saying. You can get Malkin off his game, which is virtually impossible to do with Crosby.

A conspiracy?
- NickTheKid87

Not really. The two passengers were seriously(or permanently) injured. If she had done it, then it would be her telling people that, and as far as I know, she didn't.

Pelle Obviously died, and the male passenger suffered brain damage.

I don't have Showtime.

I'm just saying that you rarely see guys test positive for PEDs or HGH in the NHL.

Flyers have an amazing core that most fans envy but your back end is too weak and overall I think you need an upgrade in the toughness department too. Also Briere needs to go.

I'm on the fence with Bryz like most of you. I think if he was insulated a little better, his performance would reflect it. Also a better back up goalie would help too cause he doesn't seem like a guy that likes a lot of games in a row. Doesn't seem to be very solid mentally for long stretches. He looked like a burnt out goalie last night with some mental errors.

Nice eval. And good luck the rest of the way. I like how the leafs play. Ok. Is there anyone left that doesn't think Briere should be bought out or traded. I'd like to warm up the engine. Your either on the wagon or off!

I think I subconsciously forget about him on purpose. Got into a debate with someone not too long ago about how the FLyers haven't won a cup in forever because the front office cant blah blah blah. Anyway I had to bring up Pelle because I really believe he was lock to put us over the top. Hell we squeezed a vezina out of hextall in 87 imagine what would have been with pelle. Anyway it is painful on so many levels personal and a sports one because of how senseless and tragic that was. THat wound will never heal.

Meh. It was, at best, a questionable signing and a stint that had almost zero impact on the team.
