When I was little, my mother would do such nice things like, pour a bowl of cereal, add the milk, then go wake us all up for school. By the time we got to the table the cereal would be a nasty, slimy, soggy mess. I usually gagged trying to eat the stuff. So she would sit down with a big spoon and tell me to "open up!" while she literally tried cramming it down my throat. As I sat gagging on her slimy offerings, she would say through her clinched teeth, "EAT IT OR WEAR IT!" Then she would dump it over my head. The long hours I would spend sitting at the table with her chicken pot pie staring me in the face. It looked like a sea of sn0t littered with peas and carrots. I would turn green just looking at it. I would sit there until my rear end was numb. I never force feed my kids. I require only that they take a few bites, if you don't like it, then at least you gave it a shot. I also never pile their plates high with any food. Small portions of everything. That way, if you want more of your favorite, you are welcome to it! If you don't like something else, it's not going to waste.
