1. Sean Monahan - Ottawa 67's
Comments: Nearly the unanimous top player available from the OHL, Monahan is certainly an impressive player. "It takes a special player to battle through the hardships that the lowly Ottawa 67’s have had to endure this season and Sean Monahan is exactly that – a special player. Monahan is a player you learn to appreciate more with each passing view of him, as his elite hockey sense and heady game become more prevalent as you dissect his game," says one contributor. Hardships is a bit of an understatement, as another contributor adds. "Sometimes you really need to see the character of a player when he faces adversity. His team is last in the OHL and he was cut from Team Canada, but Monahan continues to produce with 67 points in 48 games. He is strong in all facets of his game, and he might not realize it, but the substandard year for the 67's likely has made him a better all around player." It's that all around ability which sticks out most about Monahan. He's certainly someone who many feel is ready for the NHL next season, as many contributors pointed out. He's "a safe pick with high potential," as Ross MacLean points out. Skating is a bit of a concern, another thing nearly every contributor pointed out, but his hockey sense should help him make up for that. The real question is, how high does he go at the NHL draft? The contributor who ranked him 2nd had this to say, "I wonder if we might see him fall at the draft, similar to the way Sean Couturier did a bit. He's not going to be playing in the OHL playoffs. He's not going to be at the Under 18's. Does he run the risk of being slightly forgotten?" I guess we'll see.

I'd rather the 6-4 defenseman over the 5-11 winger. |

I think he will stay as well. Ducks can give him and Getzlaf both 6-7 million long term and without crippling the internal budget. For Perry, I don't know if it is worth leaving for what may only be a half million or so more per year offered from another team. He doesn't seem to like the spotlight a whole lot so a team like the Ducks where there is little to no media pressure is pretty well suited for him. However, until they are extended the rumors will persist.
I would rather see him go to Buffalo though, instead of Toronto, Ottawa, Detroit, etc which are the suspected destinations based on where he is from. |

Either of them would probably help, but I know that Jones has chemistry with someone else in the system already as well. That's part of what puts him over the top for me. |

I'm of the opinion if you can get a guy that can be the cornerstone of your defense for the next decade +, you do it. |

Can someone explain to me why people want Seth Jones? We don't need another defensive project like Myers. We need someone who can score. IMO taking jones over Mackinnon or Drouin would be like taking Hedman over Tavares.
Don't get me wrong I'd love Jones, but not with a top pick! We want to attract top free agents to come here we need to have talent for them to play with. |

so this is the problem i see with the sabres
there is no heart at all, the players are lazy and dont play with/for each other, they are more focused on what to say that is "politically correct" and they have no accountability
that is a leadership problem, as well as a coaching issue, the players need to want to play and want to win and go out there 100%
the sabres probably have more skill and talent then the devils, a better goalie, and all, but the devils find ways to win because they play as a unit, they have breakdowns but normally they have plans that help minimize the damage, they work hard and are aggressive, they hold each player accountable and make sure that everyone plays the same type of game (even kovy is playing more of the devils style)
adam oats recently went to the caps GM and said he wants his room and style, to have the same type of "culture" as the devils, where winning is the only acceptable answer
you can blame things on this player and that, but its a team game, there needs to be a system in place that helps when something doesnt go to plan |

I'm sure they'll manage in some way. Though I think no matter what they finish with a top 5 pick, and it's pretty much a can't miss anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter. |
