I always go teased. By friends, parents...we didn't care because none of it was malicious.

The same kid that called me a "common Italian slur" would be right next to me if I got into a fight, even after we grew up and did our early 20's Hellraising.

Not to be that guy, but I think there's about 20 years between us. Not trying to make you feel ''advanced''.

Ethnic jokes are starting to die out. I never got teased for being Ukrainian. ''Jew'' jokes were big when I was in High School.
- NickTheKid87

When I was a kid we only teased the ones we liked.

Maybe that was the same in your school.

I've been called Sa-Kay-Ya at every level of school, at jobs and in the military. Hell throughout boot camp I doubt the CC ever pronounced it correctly once. It's great when telemarketers call. I tell them if you can't pronounce my name, you're not going to get my business.
- Jsaquella

My teacher for health during my Senior year of high school pronounced my last name (Hlywiak) correctly on the first try. Only time that's ever happened. I was dumbfounded. To this day, I believe he had heard a student or another teacher say it that knew me. No way he knew on his own.

There were a few people in 'leadership' positions during my tour in Afstan that after spending more than a year with them they either didn't care or didn't want to make the effort to say my name properly.

Notice how I put leadership in quotes.

I give most people the benefit of the doubt since my name ends in 'uio', and that can throw people off.

The flyers have played 19 games. There is not one team in the west that has played 18 yet. Bruins have played 14. I'm willing to chalk last nights game up to terrible circumstance. If they are 500 after the home stand, guess what everyone their in the playoffs

Some yes, some no. I never made ethnic, racial, etc. jokes at all but I know some friends that used them with friends. Of course their were bullies though. I feel like everyone in the school had a little Irish, Italian, Germany, etc. in them so it didn't really work. The kids that were actually foreign had it the worst I'd say.

The suckiest part about that observation is that the hole they've dug for themselves can get deeper by doing nothing.

Na, I'm really good at picking up on humor. Ironically, it was the Russia/Eastern European kids that got picked on the most (probably because of their accents & the popularity of Borat as well). Although one Ukrainian kid, Dmitry, showed up for a class presentation in an entirely leather suit. We're talking coat, pants and tie made of leather. One of the funniest things I've ever seen.

K - 4 I got some joking about my surname, but that was the worst in public school. Grades 5 - 8 in Catholic school were horrible & greatly contributed to my not being Catholic since I was 18.

Hated moving from Jsaq's hometown of Westmont.
