nvm he's American....

America is sickieningly solid at goalie. Miller/Quick/Anderson/Schneider/Howard(lol) and even Thomas should he leave his anti-Obama Bunker.

Something to think about: the highest the Leafs' payroll ever was before the lock-out was US$65 million in 2002-03.

Adjusted for inflation, that's roughly US$81 million in 2012 dollars (I'm leaving out the difference in exchange rates between 2003 and 2012 for simplicity).

So, with a cap of 64 million next year, they're saving almost $20 million that they would have spent anyway with no cap.

- Leeman4Gilmour

I think that the Leafs would jump at the chance to drop the $24 million in exchange for something that helps the team.

I'm just at a loss as to what that "something" would be.

And my spider sense says that 1 first rounder isn't enough. Not sure I can explain it - it just seems to me that for $24 million, you should get more.

I don't think you pay them out in full - it's 2/3.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/...-buy-out-wade-redden.html

The accelerated compliance buyout, approved in the new labour deal, means Redden will earn a pro-rated $3.341 million for this season plus two-thirds of the $5 million he was set to earn next season.

Actually, looking at the Redden buy out - it looks like full freight for this year, and 2/3 for next year.

Weird.

This whole buyout scenario is mind-(frank)ing.

Soooooooooooooo basically we're at the 1/3 pole for the season. What team would you say is the biggest disappointment to date?

I vote for the Oilers. Their so called vaunted offense is the worse in the league in 5 on 5 situations.

Seriously, and their forwards / blueline isn't too shabby either.

Oh, definitely. Just because they're loaded, it doesn't mean that money is worthless to them.

Let's basically just call it what it is: a cash transaction. You're buying a player. In soccer, what do teams pay for transaction payments for top stars?

What would $24 million buy you in Europe? And those teams make NHL franchises look like little league teams. NYI could only dream of that kind of money.

First overall pick or a first line player. you could count on one hand the teams that have the resources to actually whip out 24 million up front for a player.

Lets try this another way. What would you say would be fair compensation for the Isles if they wanted to dump the contract and we wanted Tavares as part of the package??

I'd trade Reilly and a first rounder for Tavares and DiPietro.

Funny little fact that I just learned:

"The quarter pole" is actually a pole at the race track that is two furlongs (a quarter mile) from the finish line.

So the quarter pole is near the end, not 1/4 of the way from the start.
