1) The Richards deal didn't happen "just like that". There were apparently several conversations between the Flyers and LA, and the component of adding Simmonds (instead of a lesser piece) in addition to Brayden Schenn apparently came about when the Flyers lowered a demand for a 1st round pick to a 2nd.

2) Even with the trade deadline, most GMs have touched base months earlier during the season about "If you make so-and-so available, we're interested." That happened with the Nick Grossmann deal last year, although Dallas ended up making him available to the Flyers a little bit earlier in exchange for additional draft pick compensation. But the Flyers expressed interest as early as December and were told by Nieuwendyk that he wasn't available, but would circle back if/when he was.

Bobby Clarke's buddy. Roger Nielson. "Not our fault Roger got cancer" One of the most appalling statements ever.

Wayne Cashman had just been hired or was about to be hired when Ruff was hired in the summer of 1997. Cashman was replaced by Roger Neilson, then Ramsay and so on.

And our talk radio is all hockey during hockey season. Not stupid football in February and march. My buddies (all sabres fans) hate when they compare buffalo to Philly in the sense of what wE are willing to do trade wise fa spending. Things like that. Always brings a smile to my face

Pens are going to have 3 guys making a combined 25 million? Hard to fill out a balanced roster if that is the case.

I love the trade talk and what would be needed to improve flyers but I have the answer. Why don't we trade for detroit's scouting staff. How can they consistently get all these pukes year after year so late in the draft? And datsyuk is a beast
- SMS4016

Detroit's scouting department is completely overrated. They were on the cutting edge of drafting Russians and then Scandinavian players but the rest of the league has caught up. They haven't drafted an impact player since Johan Franzen in 2004. Take a look.

http://www.hockeydb.com/i...aft/teams/dr00005492.html

As far drafting Datsyuk it was complete luck. They drafted 7 other guys ahead of him, wih only two of them making to the NHL and one of those two played only 2 games. If they honestly knew Datsyuk would be that good, they wouldn't haven't drafted all the stiffs ahead of him. I would take the Flyers scouting over them any day. Now as far as development goes, Detroit and its not even close.

Funny story on the Richards trade.

I was doing work in the home of one of the "Flyers West" folks before the Flyers had acquired Bryzgalov. I spoke to this person about hockey, and he specifically asked me what I thought it'd take for the Kings to land Richards. I said Quick would be one guy I'd want, but also mentioned Schenn as a piece.

He said either way the Flyers would be getting a Helluva player.

At the time I was too thick to pick up on the signs.

Not sure how you are coming up with that.
- PLindbergh31

For starters, all you have to do is watch Yandle play. If you didn't like Carle for his lack of physical play, you really won't like Yandle.

11/12 Carle 55 hits
Yandle 31 hits.

Kinda makes you wonder when the Flyers decided that Richie and Carts were not the players they wanted to go forward with

You kinda have changed my mind on Yandle...doesnt he have a higher cap hit then Carle....another Carle is the last thing I would want

Yeah... Exactly. When you have 3 guys eating up like 40% of the cap, you have a bunch of league minimum players on your team.

This happened, probably 10-14 days prior to the trade for Bryzgalov's rights.

When the Carter & Richards trades broke, I was sitting in my work truck, shaking my head and saying "SOB was right!"

They are similar players defensively. And Yandle is superior offensively. Yandle is the better player by a decent margin.
