You guys kill me. I know you are all so proud of yourselves being ahead of us. All the while you are just twitching with nervousness that your team doesn't fall apart again and end up....DEAD LAST. Oh sorry, 29th.

Oh but then the inevitable " ha ha Flamers, we are getting another 1st round pick by sucking again and you are wallowing in mediocrity.... Ha ha" comments will follow.

Read it slowly to make sure you aren't too confused

Let me remind everyone of the code of conduct right now... specifically the "name calling" and "respect the blogger" parts...

This is your only warning.

Come on Tommy...When the blogger brings it on by stating blatant falshoods and blatant trolling he deserves all he gets. We regularly blast Cloutier for his delusions and idiotic posts, so I feel its only fair that Colin get blasted for this one.

Sure, but the Pens showed improvement over that period. They weren't stuck in the basement the entire time until they won.

Pittsburgh was a lotto team 5 years in a row. They picked 5th, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd.

Bartschi's already been injured twice this year. No way he ever puts up a 77 point season like hemmer. He'll top out at 50
- TheNugeIsHuge

I'm sorry, are you a talent expert??

How many injuries has Hall had in his 1st 2 years?

Oh and Hemmer has only scored 77 once and cracked 70pts 2x.

Ok. It will be long, but here is my blog "rebuttal" as you called it to your "rebuttal".

Edmonton has decided that rather than doing everything in their power to appease the above mentioned, they would rather sit back and let their team fall in the standings year after year in order to gain the strongest draft positions. While “tanking” is certainly a sure-shot way to achieve high draft selections, the question becomes: is it really the “best” plan?

The Oilers never intentionally "tanked". Over the past couple years they lost most of their top players to extended injury. They did not go out and "replace" them with overpaid, old players or trade away picks for bandaids. That is not tanking. It's simply good common sense. Meanwhile Calgary traded away tons of picks for old, over rated, over paid players and gave them NTC's.

Over the past ten years, the Oilers have made the playoffs only twice, successfully making it to the Finals in 2006. The Flames have conversely made the playoffs five times, reaching the Finals in 2004. What is the difference between the two after ten years? The Oilers are further in rebuilding their team, for now.

Again. If missing the playoffs means you are rebuilding...then I guess Calgary is officially into year 4 of their rebuild.

One is willing to welcome a losing environment in order to (hopefully) be successful again in 4-5 years, while the other aspires to fight every year to keep their team competitive.

The Oilers have never "welcomed" a losing environment. And as much as Calgary and the fans "aspire" to fight and be competitive...thats all they have done. Because they have been less entertaining over the last few years than the Oilers.

And although this is likely an inevitable circumstance for the current GM, he will not be taking the route of moving key pieces for picks/prospects which consequently leaves the Flames less able to fight for wins on a nightly basis.

We'll see. I bet he does...

They won’t sit back and watch as their team plummets in hopes that it yields high draft picks. Rather, the Flames will continue to move assets for slightly younger players who can immediately help their roster, as well as address their future needs.

So they have watched the last few years while the team has plummeted and have done what exactly? Where is this moving of assets for younger players that can immediately contribute...please elaborate?

they do have guys like Baertschi, Gaudreau, Sieloff, Brossoit, and Jankowski who will all contribute to the team in upcoming years.

Until they play in the NHL...They are no gaurantees. You may see none of them make it. To say they will play a role is "hoping" and nothing more. Just like the Oilers are "hoping" some more guys like Gernat, Simpson, Kelfbom, Marancin, Reider make it.

The difference between their current place in the standings and that of Edmonton has to do with their changes in personnel, more than their play. The Flames, for the most part, have played strong hockey this year and they also have a team that could battle for the playoffs, when it is healthy.

Hmmm...So the same arguement as the Oilers the last few years...injuries. The Flames have also had the benefit of the easiest schedule in the NHL this year. They had more practice time which essentially gave them extra "training camp" over any other team.

Now, although the Flames’ approach to find success may not be as cut and dry as Edmonton’s…they have decided that the on ice product is very important, and taking short cuts in order to find success down the road isn’t something they are willing to entertain.

Again false.

The Oilers have not supported their youth enough in past years and their rebuild seems to be never ending.

Once again...The rebuild started 3 years ago. Taylor Hall was the first year. I guess the Flames have been rebuilding the past 3 years since they missed the playoffs?

Anyone remember the hype over Sam Gagner and Andrew Cogliano?

Not much different than the hype over Baertshi and Gaudreau and Backlund?

The Flames have brought in a strong coaching staff that, despite no preseason games or practice time, has shown what they can do with this group.

Really? They have had more practice time and "preseason" than any team in the NHL. What makes them so "strong"? Because you say so? All the Flames fans said the same when Keenan came in. And when Brent Sutter came in. How easily you forget. How long until the fans wanted them run out of town?

Creating a losing environment in order to draft high is great, however does this environment have any effects on the team who had to play through it?

Again with the notion that they "intentionally tanked". Which is an out right lie and is simply Flame and other team fans sour grapes at the Oilers getting the high picks. You really believe that they "CREATED" a losing environment on purpose??? come on...

Flames fans are delusional about their team. Oiler fans knew what they were getting which is why they sold out the building every night. I have been to MANY of both Flames and Oiler games over the past 5 years. The Oilers games have always been more entertaining and fun to watch. The Saddledome was awesome in 2004. It stinks going to games there now. I know Murray Edwards, Al Markin, Clay Riddel as I do business with them. They are just as guilty as "intentionally staying mediocre" as the Oilers are of "Intentionally tanking". Give your head a shake. You want to hate the Oilers? Fine. But dont glorify the Flames and say they are any better or make poop up about how the Oilers have gotten to this point.

I just want to clarify that my blog was in no way directed at Colin and his blogs. There can be a healthy debate over the approaches used by both clubs. I am happy Colin wrote a blog in response presenting a different point of view and opinion.
