Ok, I might even come around a bit on this one... Here are the trades they made, starting with Pronger (at the bottom) and ending with the Penner trade (which I believe is where most Oilers fans point to as the start of the actual rebuild).

2011-02-28 Dustin Penner traded to Los Angeles for Colten Teubert, 1st round pick in 2011, conditional pick (2nd or 3rd round) in 2012.
2011-02-28 Shawn Belle traded to Colorado for Kevin Montgomery.
2010-06-30 Patrick O'Sullivan traded to Phoenix for Jim Vandermeer.
2010-06-26 Riley Nash traded to Carolina for 2nd round pick in 2010 (Martin Marincin).
2010-06-24 Colin Fraser traded by Chicago for 6th round pick in 2010 (Mirko Hofflin).
2010-03-03 Steve Staios traded to Calgary for Aaron Johnson and 3rd round pick in 2010 or 2011.
2010-03-03 Lubomir Visnovsky traded to Anaheim for Ryan Whitney and 6th round pick in 2010 (Brandon Davidson).
2010-03-03 Aaron Johnson traded by Calgary with 3rd round pick in 2010 or 2011 for Steve Staios.
2010-03-02 Matt Marquardt traded by Boston for Cody Wild.
2010-03-01 Denis Grebeshkov traded to Nashville for 2nd round pick in 2010 (Curtis Hamilton).
2009-07-09 Tim Sestito traded to New Jersey for conditional draft pick.
2009-06-27 Kyle Brodziak traded with 6th (Darcy Kuemper) round pick in 2009 to Minnesota for 4th (Kyle Bigos) and 5th (Olivier Roy) round picks in 2009.
2009-03-04 Erik Cole traded to Carolina with 5th round draft pick in 2009 (Matt Kennedy) for Patrick O'Sullivan and 2nd round pick in 2009 (Jesse Blacker (Toronto)).
2009-03-04 Ales Kotalik traded by Buffalo for Carolina's 2nd round draft pick in 2009 (Jesse Blacker (Toronto)).
2009-01-17 Mathieu Garon traded to Pittsburgh for Ryan Stone, Dany Sabourin and 4th round pick in 2011.
2008-07-01 Gilbert Brule traded by Columbus for Raffi Torres.
2008-07-01 Erik Cole traded by Carolina for Joni Pitkanen.
2008-06-29 Matt Greene traded with Jarret Stoll to Los Angeles for Lubomir Visnovsky.
2008-06-06 Ryan Potulny traded by Philadelphia for Dan Syvret.
2008-02-01 Curtis Glencross traded by Columbus for Richard Tarnstrom.
2007-07-05 Allan Rourke traded by NY Islanders with 3rd round pick in 2008 (Kirill Petrov (NY Islanders)) for 2nd round pick in 2008 (Travis Hamonic).
2007-07-01 Joffrey Lupul traded with Jason Smith to Philadelphia for Joni Pitkanen, Geoff Sanderson and 3rd round pick in 2009 (Cameron Abney).
2007-02-27 Robert Nilsson traded by NY Islanders with Ryan O'Marra and 1st round pick in 2007 (Alex Plante) for Ryan Smyth.
2007-02-18 Marc-Andre Bergeron traded with 3rd round pick in 2008 (Kirill Petrov) to NY Islanders for Denis Grebeshkov.
2006-07-10 Jan Hejda traded by Buffalo for 7th round pick in 2007 (Nick Eno).
2006-07-03 Joffrey Lupul traded by Anaheim with Ladislav Smid, 1st round pick in 2007 (30th overall traded with 36th overall pick for 21st overall (Riley Nash)), 1st (Jordan Eberle) and 2nd (Travis Hamonic (NY Islanders)) picks in 2008 for Chris Pronger.

There is a lot of youth coming in, but there are also trades that go the other way...

I mean Lupul and Smith for Pitkanen and Sanderson... that's just a hockey trade. Adding mobility to the back and grit to the front, and giving up the opposite.

You're right, that's not a rebuild move.

The Kotalik trade, and the Cole trade both look like re-building moves though... Grebeshkov for a 2nd looks like a rebuild move too... From that point on the only one that doesn't look that way is the trade to bring in Vandermeer, and that was a stop-gap move.

So maybe the rebuild started with Kotalik?

- jtommyt

Kotalik trade is rebuilding? We traded a second to get him? Cole wanted out, we were lucky that we were able to salvage and asset for him as he was a UFA. At the time POS was a good young player. Grebs was dealt because to qualify him it would've cost 3+mil, he sucked hence why we salvage an asset.

so uve basically shown that pre 2010-11 season we brought in;

erik cole, ales kotalik, joni pitkanen, patrick o sullivan, curtis glencross, denis grebeshkov, dustin penner, lubomir visnovsky, ryan whitney, ladislav smid, joffrey lupus
AND
thrown contracts at nylander, hossa, jagr,
AND
tried to trade for dany heatley.

only someone with blinders that wants to believe a certain line of thinking regardless of the facts could possibly call these moves anywhere near a rebuild.

You've got half of those trades backwards, and I admitted that many of them are not complete rebuild-type moves.

I can see Oilers fans' point that the period in question here is one of re-tooling and not of a complete scorched earth rebuild...

However, many of these moves (Pitkanen, Visnovsky, even Kotalik at the time) were heralded as being key to a stronger, younger Oilers team at the time, and that part never really materialized. Meanwhile, key vets, and leaders on the team (Smyth, Smith, Cole) were shipped out.

"Retool" is probably more accurate than "Rebuild", but the effort to make this team younger and more dynamic has been going on for a long time.

So we should've let UFA Cole walk on us and re-signed Grebs to 3mil+ contract?

Not necessarily... I'm not saying they were the wrong moves, but they were moves for the future. A future that's only now starting to materialize.

Ok smart guy, you may want to finish reading after the part you underlined. He said he thinks the Flames are ahead of where the Sens "were" when they picked 6th overall. Not where they currently are.

Jesus, this is debated way too much.

It's real simple "tanking" and getting high draft picks is the best way to rebuild, as rebuilding is all about adding value to your team. The Oilers have added more value to their team in the last three years than any other NHL team in the league. (Three first overall selections will do that)

Tanking is by far the best way to rebuild, even if it isn't the most respected (as it shouldn't be)

There's no backwards. All of those players were acquired and some subsequently moved. And all were acquired to improve the team immediately and make a run.
Not one of those trades save cole leaving ( who we salvaged something for as he was gonna walk) did we look to the future as the main asset. Pitkanen was the best player in the deal. As was visnovsky. As was cole. Etc etc
Kotalik was a TD move to try and get in. Nothing more.

young rebuild player??? This is clearly a case of what u want to believe, over what the oilers were obviously trying to do. Age is irrelevant. They were attempting to improve. Immediately.

Throwing contracts at jagr and hossa???

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story!

Facts? This is strictly your interpretation of what happened, many others including the so called "experts" disagree and say the rebuild started with Smyth.

I respect your opinion, as biased as it is. Let it be said that the day Iggy is traded starts the re build in Calgary, as IMO the day Smyth was traded started the re build in Edmonton

link to which experts have said the rebuild started then please.

they got what they could for smyth AT THE VERY LAST SECOND. literally. they couldnt come to terms and they did what they could to help the team.

interpretation? visnovky was the best player in the deal. as was cole. as was pitkanen.
these moves arent made by rebuilding teams under the definition of what a rebuild is.
the other way around in fact.

how in anyway can a team trying to trade young assets like penner, smid etc for dany heatley be considered looking to build for the future instead of the present? this makes no sense.
offering mega dollars to hossa? jaromir jagr past his prime?

u can call it opinion and i cant argue to much as i dont speak to tambs and lowe personally. but i never heard the word rebuild until the TD of 2010. and imo, the facts on the large amounts of acquistions and multiple attempts to improve the team immediately make my contention irrefutable.

i also respect ur opinion, however biased it might be. but i don't find it a coincidence that a fan of a hated rival that's taken the 180 approach to ours, and is also struggling, can convince oneself of said rivals neverending rebuild. and thus easing their own teams failures. (not to say ours is a success. it's year 3. our core is 18, 19, 21, 21 and 22). only time will tell.
