He's in the prime of his career now, after 2 or 3 years of his next deal, he'll be in decline. Why pay him like he's in his prime when he won't be? That's why a shorter deal would be optimal. (not saying it'll happen, though)

I think he'll remain an elite or very good player well into his 30's

yes, but that's not brad's point. giroux past prime is likely still very good.

If hell remain a very good player for a long time then what is the problem? The need for good players won't exist in the future?

kind of feel bad for the linesman. people acting like he missed a call by 10 feet, when really he (mistakenly) thought the preds played the puck back into their own zone (which, i'm guessing a few people don't realize negates an offside). for some reason, this distinction makes a big difference to me.

If he continues to play at a high level, then there's no need to feet over the length of the deal.
- JoeRussomanno

I agree, 8 years for Giroux is fine, and perhaps the extra year the Flyers can give him over other teams will mean he takes a slightly lower cap hit. There's no reason he can't be productive well into his 30s like St. Louis and Datysuk have been.

We should just be thankful the days of $100 million deals that last for more than a decade are behind us.

Good point. Either way, they should probably start reviewing goals like that for the sake of avoiding the inevitable aftermath.

the idea of paying a past his prime player 8mil a year is the problem.

but the thought of life without giroux has to be factored in, as well. there's no easy substitute and life without giroux costs the flyers a lot more than what they'd save by not extending him.

either way, it's moot. holmgren will pay him 10 mil a year to stick, if he has to.

It's not even like we flipped a left winger for a right winger either.

Edit: never mind I have Briere on the wing and you have Schenn there.

fine line/slippery slope territory there, but i'm all for robot umps in baseball, so i'm not terribly opposed to this.

I think you could give that daniels-Lacroix-Kordic line a skating head start from the end boards to the blueline, and the 4th line the Flyers trotted out for the game yesterday would beat them in a race to the other end of the rink rather handily.

The slope's only as slippery as they choose to make it. There's no reason why all scoring plays shouldn't be reviewed if need be. It's not like balls and strikes where it'd drag the game out.

100%.

if the flyers dressed a fourth line like that today, my b1tching would admittedly be intolerable.
