Until prop values in parts of the city within walking distance to downtown start plummetting to 1/10th of their value, Chicago is nothing like Detroit.

Having said that, and being a 32 year resident of Chicago, I'm not fond it... The winters I can tolerate if I don't spend 3 months out of the year with a cough. But its really the corrupt and bankrupt union-arse-kissing city govt that bug me... Anytime your mortgage is less than your property tax there's something grossly dysfunctional going on...

The Indianhead is near the very top of the short list of things I love about the city.

Ha! Maybe Keith should take out the fake choppers before the game - nobody goes for that.

Crime is out of control because poop heads run wild under the knowledge and protection of Chicago's anti gun laws . They know people are not allowed to defend themselves. Once the people are allowed to arm themselves the robberies, car jackings and home invasions will plummet . When those crimes decrease so does murder.
- mrpaulish

Well this just isn't true. Chicago's hand gun ban was held unconstitutional over a year ago. Ironically about the same time you saw this recent spike in crime ...

Got to jump in here - lifetime Chicagoan. Born here. Raised here. I'm out in the burbs and have been for the past 25+ years.

Absolutely beautiful city (and honestly, in spite of those who hated Richie Daley, under his reign the city really "cleaned" itself up quite well). It's been in the last half-dozen years things have gone to hell-in-a-handbasket -- the last few yrs of Richie's rule forward.

The downtown area is about as nice as you'll find, especially compared to L.A., San Fran, NY. Beautiful lakefront.

Traffic is simply awful and only getting worse. Very good public transportation (trains, buses and the L).

But this whole shoot-em-up thing in a good part of the city just blows. I sometimes wish they would all kill themselves and leave the city to the rest of us. I really don't know if it's a case of the haves vs have-nots (I mean, for the most part they are killing each other. Dammit, just do a Thunder-dome, drop em all in there and let them wipe one another out).

Honestly, it's very sad. It's a great city with mostly great people and some of the hardest working people around. Just blows that they cannot and may not ever get this whole killing thing under control. I don't have the answer and it saddens me because I love Chicago.

The fix is easy just let law abiding citizens conceal carry and watch gun violence decline but in liberal utopia the government is only allowed to arm itself. The serf are not to be trusted with dangerous weapons for self preservation

C'mon Q, you are smarter than that - that ruling has had very little impact on who has the guns. The changes that may or may not come because of changes in the law won't be seen for years.

Don't give me your I'm from the ghetto and your just a white collar suburbanite bullshyt. I had a couple kids get shot at a 7-11 down the street from me and plenty of other shyt go down around here as I know a couple cops and detectives in Schaumburg. The fact remains whether it be shootings or kidnapping or robberies it's happening more and more in the city and suburbs whether you want to remain blind to it is up to you. I don't give a shyt either way but I just pray none of you or your families are a victim to it. Don't be so blind and stubborn to think it doesn't happen around you and just in certain POCKETS of the city.
- CanUSA17

Yeah, how you go off on this rant based on what I posted is beyond comical. Particularly the part of me acting ghetto. Crime happens. Even in your beloved Vancouver. I hear they even had a riot a few years back ...

But to erroneously suggest Chicago is becoming Detroit or to claim, again erroneously, that crime is rampant throughout Chicago just smacks of hyperbole and naïveté.

No doubt, but the OP's point was that Chicago's anti-gun laws (which I can only imagine he's referencing the former handgun ban) were prohibiting people from protecting themselves and that just isn't true as no such law exists and hasn't for quite some time.

Well you are about to get your way. Probably by April, though I seriously doubt you'll see a reduction in gun violence. Sadly, no correlation has ever been found to a reduction in gun violence in states permitting conceal and carry.

I dont care to argue stats or the manipulation of stats since the second amendment is a god given right and not a right bestowed on the citizens by the government.

Not to say nothing happens in Rich Schaumburg areas or anything but you can't compare it to the jungle that the city had become. How many murders already in Chicago ? How many in Schaumburg or all other suburbs combined ?
- HawksGuySince85

Doesn't matter to me. All that matters to me is my kids being in danger when their friends were shot or their friends had to run away from someone trying to abduct them in broad daylight after school which has happened in rich Schaumburg right around my white picket fence neighborhood as you say. Like I said dont be so (frank)in blind just because you or I don't live in a bad part of town. I hope it never happens to me, any of you, or my worst enemies kids but there are some (frank)ed up things happening more and more around here.

The fact of the matter is there are smart people on both sides but the terrible and inhumane decisions of the individuals who commits are what it ultimately comes down to. Mental health and gang reduction are the best ways to address gun violence in this country.

On a hockey note, who are everyone's pick to click tonight? I'm going with 19. Dominated the first 40 on Sunday and I think he's poised for a point streak similar to the one Kaner was just on. Your thoughts boys?

I'm going with my main man Leddy -- I'm thinking he and Keith are going to have a HUGE game tonight, lots of PP time for Nick too.

Let me also add, big Hoss is due for a HUGE game as well. Tonight's the night. You heard it here 1st.

You don't like the people on this board yet you spent the whole day here and have probably contributed to over 30% of the posts. You don't like where you live yet you still live there and all you do is complain about it. My first comment about you being dropped on your head as a child seems to have been accurate.
- paulr

Once again you are another one who has to put someone down to make yourself feel better with your dropped on your head comment. It's fine I've grown out of that stage in my life and don't need to bash people to make myself feel better. Yes I have posted on JJ's blog today and he can thank me later but go back to my 1st post and read it. I came in here to talk about the game peacefully. Since then I've only been defending myself and my team but no where have I said I didn't like anyone on this board. I'm not that kind of person to dislike someone I have never met, in fact I can truly say right now as I type this I can't think of a person in my life that I hate. Some posters on here have resorted to name calling which I use to do but in all honesty I realized was very stupid...no reason to respond that way. Do I want the Canucks o beat the Hawks tonight? Of course,I would love it if they did but win or lose I'm not gonna run in here tonight or tomorrow either gloating or hide if they lose. I love my teams but them winning or losing really won't make a difference in my life personally. It should be a great game so enjoy it and even though we don't agree on pretty much anything good luck and I still say I hope the Canucks meet the Hawks in the Conference Finals and that no one gets injured.

I'm more inclined to think Chicago's crime problem is due to the piss poor education system that has had a 52% drop out rate for the past 5 + years.
