Saving money where he can is a far cry from what he's doing. I understand that he's lost tons of $$ on this team. I have no doubt that he's probably lost the same amount of $$ that he actually bought the team for. But that being said, he can't expect people to pay good hard-earned money to come out to a dump and watch a border-line NHL quality product. Its not fair for Wang to circumvent the CBA and maintain a team with a collective payroll of well below the salary floor in actual dollars spent, yet expect fans to come out and pay NHL prices to watch AHL quality.

Wang puts no $$ into the on-ice product. Its all waiver wire guys, kids on ELC's or cheap vets. Nobody's saying he needs to spend to the salary cap. Nobody expects that. But we have every right to expect Wang to at least legitimately spend to the salary floor, spending actual dollars to get to that point instead of reaching the salary floor through unattainable bonuses to rookies or by trading for contracts that he won't have to pay. We can expect him to invest in the coaching staff so that this team of developing young players isn't being coached into the ground by a coach clearly in over his head and two assistants who are no better.

- Jethro09

Can't agree more. The barebones of the organization bothers almost more than the on ice payroll. No true player development coach, poor head coach. An assistant
GM/assistant. If you want to build through the draft, then at least hire a good development structure for them.

Is it any coincidence that outside a select few, most of our draft picks havent reached their potential ?

I think for the most part everyone agree's that Wang is being thrifty to say the least. I guess the bigger question is, can he be blamed for it at this stage?
As fans, we all are sick of two decades worth of crap from this organization which makes it easy to forget the early efforts Wang did put in with this team.

I think after being turned down by a few UFA's and publically turned down by a few traded players, Wang realized there was no winning until this team reached a sustainable situation. Brooklyn is that situation so my guess has been for the last few years that he would bide time until 2015 when the lease ended. It was said that even if the Isles were to sell out every game of the season and playoffs, they'd still end up in the red becasue of the unfavoarable lease. From that standpoint, Wang likely see's it as a 'no win' situation and therefore wise to play budget hockey until the team can actually put their bottom line in the black (ie. 2015).

Naturally from a business standpoint, you need your company to be successful to expect financial rewards so at some point his ultimate goal has to be to go all in again.

- keaner17

I still don't understand why it's a lock that all of a sudden when they get to Brooklyn, they will start spending money. The place holds less than 15,000 and if the team still stinks why would attendance be any different?

The one sustainable thing the isles have is the tv contract which covers half the teams payroll off the bat.

I just think Wang doesn't have the money we all think he does. His other businesses are in trouble, he is being sued for over a billion currently by ex CA employees, he owes the NHL $75 mill by the end of next year. The guy is in trouble financially as far as rich people go.

Isles, Streit discuss contract extension
TheFourthPeriod.com

New York Newsday has reported that the Islanders have held preliminary contract talks with pending unrestricted free agent defenseman Mark Streit.
Streit, 35, is believed to be looking to re-sign with the Isles, though his future with the team will depend on how the club performs over the next month.

"The fact is I like it here. We have a really good team," Streit told Newsday(not the team I'm watching). "I've been here five years and I have a really good role, I love the room and I can tell the improvement is here the last few years. It's maybe 5 percent we're missing to break through(wtf). Overall, I'd like to stay."
If the Islanders aren't in playoff contention by the trade deadline, Streit and fellow blueliner Lubomir Visnovsky could be shopped, especially when decent defensemen are in such high demand on the market.

In the meantime, Isles GM Garth Snow is waiting to have contract discussions with netminder Evgeni Nabokov's agent (I guess we'll have the same goalie next year), and he is also busy shopping center Marty Reasoner.

However, Reasoner's recent offensive struggles suggest there might not be many takers, which could push the Isles to place him on waivers (what took so long).

I watched the first part of the game... then left.

It was 3--0 @ that point, and saw enough then.

Didn't watch any of the lowlights last night on TV.

Tonights games is on Sportsnet... I will watch it... but I have no issue changing over to NCIS, and NCIS LA @ anytime...

The seating is definitely a loss of potential revenue, however most of the teams losses were due to terrible concessions deals with SMG. This is why they say he could have sold out all the games but still come out under. I'd love to see the total terms of his lease with Barclay/Ratner.

You make a good point regarding his finances. His net worth is $890 million. Of course based on Forbes he's lost somehwere in the neigbhorhood of $160-220 million since purchasing the team. So nearly a quarter of his networth has theoretically been lost. Even if the math is fuzzy to many, it can't be disputed that he's in a very dangerous situation when operating with incredible annual losses. I don't think the $75 million loan is a problem since a guy with as many assets as Charles will probably have no problem refinancing that amount. This does however make me wonder if he's perhaps considering selling a minority stake in the Islanders. I don't believe for a second that he'd sell the whole thing with more prosperous times ahead. He knows that TV contract will balloon from $17 million annually to $36 million within just the next 15 years.

So I think for Wang, the goal is to eek it out until 2015, then maximize his earning capablities. Unfortunately, we all continue to suffer as the result.

works for me...cant hurt to get as many prospects/picks to trade/draft during the offseason, not to mention have more and more money coming off the books, causing wang to need to spend...

True, however the Barclay's Center has 60 more luxury boxes than the Nassau Coliseum, so that should make up for some of the loss revenue.
