From NHL Trade Rumors:

The New York Islanders are actively shopping their captain, Mark Streit, for the 2013 NHL season. Streit has a $4.1 million cap hit contract that is about to expire. The steady defenseman accumulated 47 points in 82 game last year. He is going to demand another contract that pays him over $4 million.

The 35 year old defenseman was a late bloomer, playing many hockey seasons in Switzerland, the country that he was born into. He got his start in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens in 2005-2006 and continues to be an offensive threat on the back end.

GM Garth Snow is looking to trade Streit for draft picks because the NY Islanders have an owner that is unwilling to spend over the cap floor. The Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild are interested in acquiring Mark Streit before the trade deadline.

Over the cap floor? He's unwilling to spend up to the cap floor. Hence, the Tim Thomas trade and the rushing of Nino to the NHL last year.

At this stage it's obvious that the Isles have plenty of holes. We desperately need more muscle on this team. We so desperately lack a disruptive force in front of the net. We also need our 'coach' to do a better job of finding good line combos. Boyes is not going to work on the 1st line, not because he isn't a decent player, but because he's essentially the same type player as Moulson. Both are guys who have great hand eye coordination and do a good job at redirecting shots, but have very little mobility and lack the strong backchecking abilities. Meanwhile, as bad as he is at times, Bailey needs to be given a bigger role with more talented linemates. I still contend that we need a skilled big guy up front with JT and MM, but since we don't have that on this team, Bailey may as well be given the shot.

Our defense is an obvious sore spot. Out of the whole crew, only Viz and Hamonic seem like keepers and Viz is 35. Finley shows some promise provided he can develop his skillset but after that we have a LONG ways to go.

Goaltending is my biggest concern now. I thinnk our decent goal output early on has masked the fact that we have not really gotten good goaltending thus far.
Nabokov 3.13GAA .894 pct
DiPietro 4.10 GAA .855 pct
Now typically I will defend goaltenders by saying stats like these are misleading. Even in the category of save percentage, this can typically be as much of an indiator of the # of scoring chances given up by a team as anything, but while I've seen Nabby make several big stops this season, I've also seen him play painfully average thus far. With two goaltenders competing for time at the Bridge, the time is here to demote DP and bring up one of those two. I doubt they could do much worse.

You cant blame Nabby though take out yesterdays game and his numbers are really not that bad. Especially on a team that has no defense what so ever. You can put The King behind there and he would have those numbers

Thank You chief. I've been saying that for a while now and some of our Isles friends on the board do not agree.

I'm blaming EVERYONE but I'm not obsolving Nabby either. I think for the most part he's been very average this year and you can't have 'average' on a below average squad. The defense is the primary problem but the goaltending has not been very good thus far. I think we can do better in both positions.

no he doesn't. they are about 5 or 6 mil over the cap. that's why they got Thomas so they can dump without getting anything back but picks

I should have known, this was a way for Wnager to save $.... So, then Streit for a pick, does he get a # 2 or # 3 for him?

Question 2 all.....

Bc of alot of holes this team has, and ppl always say u build a team from the goalie out. besides the financial bs this team has, wouldnt it be a great move if the isles actually made a move for a more established goalie instead of waiting for our young kids? because the kids in goal would need experience, plus the kids coming on defense, so in actuallity this could continue for alot longer then anticipated bc
of all the young kids needing to get NHL ice time and experience......

At least they sat Ullstrom for the second time in three games. Clearly that was the real problem and I'm sure it's doing wonders for his confidence.

This is interesting to, check out this quote from Gary Bettman regarding the Isles several years ago:
"The Islanders must present a squad 'that hasn't just simply been created to slash payroll without regard to the hockey consequences"
I'm not sure how they could allow that Thomas trade without considering it was done for exactly this reason. At this point it appears obvious that Wang and Snow are content to watch the clock tick towards 2015 without much effort.

the Islanders are bad and there is no question about it. I knew they were goign to be awful this year and next year as well until we move. Wang has destroyed the sport I love so much and the team as well. This is why people start looking for other teams. They get worse and worse every year. This is no longer a rebuild but a retread.

this team is not going to get better with the players it has just worse. Wang has to be a by far the worse owner in professsional sports. Why anyone would want to play here is ridiculous. If I am the players I would not even play until he sold the team.

I am going to the game Sunday (I dont know why but my brother asked me too) but I am going to go nuts

It's bad. The team as a whole is terrible. Nabby is actually one of the better players out there recently. I would have a hard time blaming him.
- Cptmjl

agreed. guy is forced to stand on his head every night. defense is way to soft... every goal given up, the 2 defensemen are usually hugging the post with the opposition whacking the puck right in front of the net....

Beats me...that's what I said when it happened...doesn't matter what your thoughts are on the move itself, but it was clearly done with the specific purpose of bending the rules...heck, Snow essentially admitted that to the media (I think he said something like "it gives us flexibility" or whatever). Couldn't it be said that NJ's move with the Kovy contract was designed to give them "flexibility" too? How does one team get fined and not the other?

How could you not? I'm sure Hamonic wanted to smash his stick right over the back of DP's neck after that 3rd goal

might as well continue on the bashing train....

I have to agree. I think he's far and away the best dman on our team, but that's not saying much. I think pairing him with AMac is poison at this stage. That first goal was a disgrace for both of them (including Frans) as all three stood and watched Greenig get multiple pokes at the puck as DP tried to cover it. It seems like neither one is real aware of the other as they both have gotten caught behind the net together on more than a few occasions lately.
