Just to add to this: my ideal system would be 4-on-4 for 5 minutes, then 3-on-3 for 5 minutes, then end the game in a tie if nobody scores.

One point each for a tie. No points for OT losses.

It could work I guess but I never had an issue with the pre-lockout (03-04) tie rules.

The Leafs are 4th in GAA in the NHL if the team keeps the shots to the outside these guys will do real well...

The league has always handed out a point when the 60 minutes ends in a tie. Nothing has changed, the NHL still rewards ties after regulation.
