Pretty much the same line-up to choose from.. big difference in results from the team buying into Carlyle's system.
We didn't have the Gratzky's & Lemieux's to play Wilson's game.. I am sure he would've won a cup with the 80's Oilers.. nowadays.. he couldn't win jack.
Best move was firing Wilson... & hiring Carlyle. - DoctorNHL
Agreed, just 2 years too late, IMO. |

Think Wheeler on TSN1050 said last night that Scrivens would be getting the start tonight.. guess the question must've been asked of Carlyle...

I like how he plays now than ever. He finally doesn't have the pressure to be producing PPG. He's playing simple game, chips in offensively only when safe, very physical on the body without penalties, smart plays and his slapshot is becoming more accurate.
He's no longer a pylon in my books if he keeps this up. - hooligoon
He's playing better ( a little ) I think due to less playing time...when he's playing over 30 minutes a game he just doesnt have the stamina to keep making good plays against the leagues best...I always wondered why he was falling down all the time...but it was due to fatigue...less ice - better play. IMHO |

I agree with you but will go one further.. should've never been hired in the first place... his treatment of Leaf fans from day one was as arrogant as his treatment of the players.

in fairness to Wilson, he never got the kind of goaltending the Leafs are getting right now (on a consistent basis at least). and you can point to defence but the Leafs are giving up shots and opportunities. - scotch_tape
wouldnt matter anyway the his style of coaching didnt have the defence collapsing like it is now. they were bound to get lit up with his run and gun style. He is not a good coach for this team |

I could see team GAA being 8th with 2.24, but i would think we would be higher than that in the sv% category with a .930? |

The goalies were still young and maturing, they didn't just drink some magic elixir. The difference is in the system. The problem with the Leafs is they dont have enough of the size up front and down the middle, so they lose battles in their own end often. But the quality of shots, the scoring chances and the odd man rushes have been vastly reduced. Most of the shots on net arent of the same quality, and most of the time in the Leafs zone are just battles along the board. There is a noteable difference between the skating around last season to more structure this season.
Then you factor in an improved PK, and the fact Toronto is scoring 1st in games more often than last year and alot of the time spend giving up shots is mostly because the team is trying to learn how to protect the lead. Lots of inexperience on this team at the NHL. |

to add to your points. There is an intangible a lot of people overlook. Enforcer/physical players. How many soft/ish player on the Leafs roster got cojones now thanks to their presence. Can we deny that players like Orr, MacLaren & Fraser pumped everyone's tires?
We were a fast high producing offense last year but on the flip side, we had weak goalkeeping and weaker defense. And it was even more obvious when we played physical teams like Boston. Fast forward to now with RC defense first system with a sprinkle of toughness, what do you get? A team with everyone not afraid to play their hardest. Prime example of someone who literally had no balls and has some now, KESSEL!
Admit it, hockey need us goons!
