I didn't assume your succes level, just making a point about your earning potential. Its proven to be higher with a degree, not always, but usually. typically less work, especially in the management field.

I was an advertising executive at AM&A's for exactly one year until I understood that a desk job was not for me. Desk work was very unsatisfying for me.
I do however miss AM&A's downtown and the classic Christmas windows back in the day.

Fancy college degree... a huge load of debt.. and a job making minimum wage.

College is a giant sham now. I am actually worse off then several people I know who did not go to college. They got jobs by knowing people. We make about the same give or take a few bucks here or there. The only problem is, I have 20K is school debt left to pay off, while they are debt free.

The sad part is 20K is low end. I see kids racking up 6 figure college loan debts. They will never pay those off.

School loans were rated the number 1 worst loan to take out, and the most defaulted on. That is why a lot of places stop giving them out.

It is and it isn't. Many of these people who are taking out student loans are going to big expensive schools for degrees that don't pay up. College is an investment. A degree doesn't guarantee you a job, but there are certain fields that you can't get a job without one. Like any investment, it takes careful planning as to where you want to go. I'm sorry, but I really don't feel bad for the person that racks up a 5 to 6 figure debt amount to be a theater major. A 5 year old could have told them that the odds were against them from the outset.
