No some fans a willing to trade potential(Gardiner) for potential......
Gardiner hasn't proven anything yet and right now is nothing more than "potential"... - Fruitcakenipple
this
fact is, he scored 30 points as a rookie
impressive, but not astounding.
high ceiling for the kid? yes
guaranteed? no |

its not that carlyle wont play him, its just that he has liles.
take an honest look at carlyle's preferred D
PMD and/or risk reward types:
phaneuf, liles, franson
steady, gritty, stay at home guys
kostka, fraser, holzer
carlyle brings a balanced approach, so gardiner wont see much game action until one of the 3 offensive minded guys are out of the picture. - Dozzer
Gardiner even with his defensive limitations at present for me is still a better Dman than Liles.. the problem is the contract of Liles.. and because the trade market hasn't heated up just yet.
Gardiner can go down... to get game time.. Liles would have to clear waivers.. I think Nonis wants to trade Liles.. going forward and that was the best call across the board.
I never said Gardiner was an AHL defencemen nor do I think that quite high on the kid.. but like Kadri needs to iron out the wrinkles on the defensive side of the puck.

Kostka isn't a stay at home guy, writings on the wall who Gardiner will be replacing. |

AGREED. Eakins & Carlyle will make sure he becomes an all round D-man & not end up a one trick pony like McCabe. |

Kostka was placed on Liles line to cover for the poorly timed jumps he always makes.. Carlyle considers Kostka a much better defender than Liles.. I personally don't like have two lightwieghts on the same pairing but that is the thought process behind it.

kinda how i see it. tho, i am not sold on liles being bought out or moved. if i were to make a guess, franson is trade bait. at the deadline he can be moved out for a high return (for his ilk) and gardiner draws in when the offensive role is opened up for him
tho, so long as they are winning, there is no reason to push the prospects forward. its a good thing that its becoming harder to make this team |

Hell I didn't even thnk Gardiner looked bad in the games he did play. His first period against the islanders he looked fast as (frank) and right where he left off last season. |

Gardiner has awesome potential to be with the elite of the league.. but as a young guy has to be guided in the right direction.. I look for great things once he returns.

I wouldn't bet on that. Gretzky was the best offensive player of all time. He also holds the record for most short-handed goals.
Yeah, the guy killed penalties. He was also a career +518.
It's an interesting "what if" though. - Leeman4Gilmour

disagree
paired with phaneuf (risk taker)
and liles (risk taker)
kostka is the "supposed" steady presence.. whether or not he proves to be capable of it. vets are starting to get their game legs back now |

Agreed... it is a much better thing with more competition.
I was also big on getting rid of Franson but since he has calmed down and played a simpler game.. he has become quite effective, not as sure now.
Although you are right he would command a higher ticket, but Liles has to be moved he still has a few years and that is wasted money with Gardnier, Reiley, and Percy coming.. not to mention Blacker.

i dont disagree on liles seemingly being in the way.. but to buy him out will cost big money
i think franson's value is about as high as its going to get. bring in a good return leaving liles to mentor gardiner, and then when liles contract is up, gardiner becomes rielly's mentor. |

When Gunarsson & Gardiner come back, the top 2 Leaf pairs should be: Phanuef/Gunarsson than Fraser & Gardiner. The rest is up in the air. After the top 4, we have Franson, Liles, Holzer, Koztka. So yes Liles & Komi need to go & I guess we will have our top 7.

I say get a pick for Liles from someone desperate.. I think Liles mentoring of Gardiner has been the problem.. bad habits of giving odd man rushes and jumping at the wrong time.. not to mention being soft in front of the net.. I think is Carlyle's reasoning for sending Gardiner down.

Yeah, that's part of the legend of Gretzky, I guess.
At no point in time was he ever really the best at any one thing. Didn't have the hardest shot, or the most accurate shot. Wasn't the best skater. Wasn't the fastest or the strongest.
But his mind was always 3 steps ahead of everybody else. Even the best defenders on the opposing teams didn't know what they were going to do before Gretzky did. |

This O'Reilly discussion reminds me of epic saga of how Stastny was our guy...remember that?
I don't know much about O'Reilly, but a young guy holding out to the point that his own teammates are saying whatevs about him is a red flag to me. It's a punk move, which I'd totally accept if a guy was an exceptional talent, but no one's saying this guy is that. Also he just witnessed the owner's resolve during the lockout, and PK Subban getting stuffed by the Habs...not really crazy about a guy who holds out in a short season, seems like a weakheart move |

Hitting Gretzky was, to paraphrase one NHLer, like trying to check a rope hanging from the ceiling. - Leeman4Gilmour
Not when you can grab him and punch him in the face.. Gretzky was protected by a lot of muscle.. some of the best enforcers ever.. and part of the reason he didn't get hit.. was because if you touched him guaranteed one or both of McSorley & Semenko would be punching you in the face.
My team of Orr's would still win.. all Gretzky's out with an indefinite concussion.. like I said it is a team game.. and you need role players..
