No, I think everyone has their mind made up on what he's worth, but after last night, I'm pretty sure D is what the Avs want.
The rumored "roster player" is assuredly a defenseman. - Leeman4Gilmour

I see what you're saying, but think about when you walk...which part of your foot touches the ground first?...and which direction is the front of of your foot going?...anyway no matter its all good - JIMI-JAMES
You need the flex of the front part bending when it hits the ground.... |

I've got to admit: Smyth got his ass in gear last night.
But Colorado's D is Swiss cheese. Maybe amongst the worst in the NHL without Johnson. If we're willing to deal some surplus D-men, O'Reilly might be attainable. - Leeman4Gilmour
Even poopney looked better. he only got beat back up the ice 75% of the time instead of 100%. |

Considering what they got when they got for Shattenkirk and Stewart, the Avalanche might be one of the few teams that can be robbed blind. |

haha. forgot off hand...who was the pick used on?
Of course without Varlamov, they likely would have been beat by about 8 goals last night. |

Filip Forsberg. Not that bad of a deal. They needed a young goalie and they got one. Washington probably would be better off right now had they kept Varlamov. Neuvirth is worthless. |

It wasn't a great deal for Washington, but I think it illustrates the crappiness of Colorado's management.
First, they traded Craig Anderson for Brian Elliot. Then they traded a 1st and a 2nd for Varlamov after letting Elliot walk as a free agent... Then they signed J.S. Giguere on the cheap, and he ended being the starter for the first half of last season before he went out with an injury.
Maybe it's not the Varlamov trade itself but the combination of bad goaltending moves? |

The Varlamov deal itself wasn't that bad. The rest of the goaltending decisions however, pretty bad. |

you're taking an incredibly simplistic view on this. it depends who the starting goalie is. if it's, say Carey Price in Montreal or Tuuka Rask in Boston or Henrik Lundqvist in New York or Pekka Rinne in Nashville, you're right. when it's James Reimer, you're wrong. and that skater also happens to be the best defenseman in the NHL and one of the top 5-10 players in the world right now.
what the Senators are experiencing right now is equivalent to the Leafs being without Kessel, Lupul, van Riemsdyk and Kadri. all of the injuries affect their offense. it's much easier when the injuries are spread out, as they are with the Leafs. that's where depth comes in. - scotch_tape
Reimer has a better Save Percentage than Price, Rask, and Lundqvist. Ahead of Lundqvist in GAA, but behind Price, Rask, and Rinne. You can't say he isn't a good goalie; you're dismissing him like a backup. |

And unlike any of those other goalies, Reimer doesn't have the same track record. Brian Elliot led the league in everything last year. Doesn't mean he's a legitimate starter. |

I'd rather not see good young players suffer serious injuries because of cheap shots to be honest |
