Extra extra, the oilers fans have shown up again. Breaking news, now that Phaneuf has been brought up the TO ones will be arriving. Sens fans will still be in mourning over loss of Karlsson. - immature_male
I can stay out of your exclusive clubhouse if you insist.
Fans of other teams will tend to want to post though when you speculate on who Bieksa is better than on every team the league. |

average isnt year by year. Stop trying to manipulate the numbers.... - gzatron
Also, doesn't that demonstrate that Phaneuf - if not better - has at least posted better stats? |

There's also an important point to be made: not all giveaways are equal. Short of a 'Giveaways Unequivocally Leading to Goal Against' stat (GULGA?) you can't really compare them in mere numbers.
IE. the characterization of Bieksa as a turnover machine might have to do with the timelines or quality (or lack thereof) of his turnovers
EG. Turnover in the neutral zone leading to a 3-3 the other way at 9:51 of the 1st period > turnover behind your own net leading to a wrap around goal breaking a tie with 2:21 left in the 3rd. |

Matt Cooke should be kicked out of the league. |

This would be an interesting stat to see for all players. |

Phaneuf: Non-playoff and lottery teams with next to 0 support
Bieksa: Back-to-back President's Trophy teams littered with individual awards
You think these two points might have an impact on Phaneuf's and Bieksa's stats JUST A LITTLE?
I think it's also safe to say that with the exception of Vancouver, the Northwest has been the weakest division in the league in recent years. |

Dunno how Bieksa would actually rank up. I do know that it would help qualify how a guy like Joe Thornton can generally be seen to be a good puck possessor but still have 90 giveaways every year |

Really?
Other than Letang, I don't see anyone better. Maybe Despres, for the future, but not right now. Martin isn't as good as Bieksa, and makes more. Neither is Niskanen. |

What is he wrong about?
His rankings about where Bieksa would fit in certain teams' D corps might be a bit subjective, but some are certainly true.
And it's hard to disagree with some of the other stuff. |

Here's the thing, is solely because they're playing for good/bad teams that their stats are the way they are? There are top-4 defensemen on good teams with bad stats (Ballard (considering that at the time we traded for him, was believed to be a top-4 d-man) would come to mind (actually, maybe Doughty on LA would be a better example)) and there are those on bad teams with good stats (Karlsson last year as Ottawa would never have made it into the playoffs without him having a Coffey like year) |

All of those songs save Welcome to the Jungle suck bag. Really they are truly awful uninspiring pieces of music.
Welcome to the Jungle would be fine if the arena was that kind of environment. Perhaps it should be Frankie Goes to Hollywood and "Relax" a more fitting tune.
This stuff is hard to do but a song needs a sweet cool build up to a massive crescendo. Welcome to the Jungle has that.
As for Bieksa

Bieksa in a heart beat the guy is magic when games count. SJ game - pker2theend
I see them as pretty similar players.
Probably lean towards Bieksa even if the salaries were closer, but lets face it, despite being overpaid, Phaneuf is still a valuable player. |

Forgot about him. Still not sure he's better than Bieksa overall, but I love his physical play. Not sure about the others, though. |

I totally agree. Bieksa is a solid d-man, but I also think his stats have benefited from playing with the Canucks.
You could pretty much put Bieksa on any other team and I'd be willing to bet that his stats would decline.
Phaneuf was a 44 point d-man last season and that's with the Leafs' epic collapse! He'd be 55+, possibly even 60+ on Vancouver, IF he was their #1 PP point man. |
