Jordan Eberle was their first round pick the following draft. As of right now it looks like Eberle will be a better player than Vanek, he's already well on his way. - sbroads24

they won 41 games the following year so as a "cup contender" im sure a lot of people would want to come. - hubie
I disagree. how can you attract players as a 9th seed team with a aging goalie and D line and no future with drafting because they traded there first rounders |

even if it was top 10, the Sabres track record for 1st round talent is terrible. - RynoBull
I would say at that point.. yes we would have f'd it up... but in the last 2-3 years.. darcy has been moderately good with his selections in the draft.. only 4% of all players drafted ever make it to the NHL. |

You assume to much. True, he might be better. But you don't know if the Sabres would've drafted him, and you don't know if he would have flourished in Lindys' system. Not many have. |

Thats true but your saying them getting Vanek and losing the several 1st round picks will attract players to come to your ATM crappy team? - Smittyx36
This whole debate could be solved with a very special episode of Fringe. |

Eberle was there 22 overall pick. We wouldn't have gotten that pick. Although we did pass on him. That was the year we drafted ennis and myers. |

Ok fair enough but still. I know it's hindsight and it doesn't matter now, but to say we are in better shape than EDM is false IMO. |

4.* The Edmonton Oilers' first-round pick went to the Buffalo Sabres as the result of a trade on June 20, 2008, that sent the 13th-overall pick and a third-round pick in 2009 to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for this pick.
Los Angeles acquired previously as the result of a trade on June 20, 2008, that sent the 17th-overall pick and the 28th-overall pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for this pick.
Anaheim acquired previously, along with second and third-round picks, from Edmonton as the result of Anaheim's decision not to match an Oilers' offer sheet to restricted free agent Dustin Penner on August 2, 2007.[3]

What? What percentage of 1st round pick make it to the NHL? You said 4% of picks make it, were not talking about rounds after the 1st. |

Its much higher then that for the 1st round. Just look at the drafts from 2006-2011. |

It's not because that would mean only 8 players of every draft make it to the NHL |
