He can't be sent down, he's too young for the AHL. A weird loophole but he has to be on the NHL squad - TheJerseyDevil1
I thought since it's the Quebec league he could go back to them or the AHL. |

Actually, can Matteau go to the AHL? JT Miller is in the AHL as an underage player because he did not play in the CHL before the draft. Bergfors was similar. I know this is the case for all European players, but I don't know how it works with North Americans. |

It's only if you were playing in juniors. Like some players will stop playing in college to play in the AHL though not many. |

Isn't it different between leagues; like OHL, CHL, college, etc.? Like some can only go back to juniors and some can do juniors or AHL. |

This trade makes sense on a few levels. Dainius Zubrus will have wrist surgery tomorrow so the Devils add a healthy body in Ponikarovsky to fill the void. The price wasn't steep, and he's proven he can play in Pete DeBoer's system.
If Poni was so good why didn't Lou resign him and save two picks? |

We spent a good amount of time trying to sign that guy Parise. Dunno if you know about him. |

No, if he had started the season in the AhL like Girgensons, he could've since he was drafted out of the USHL, but since he played in the Q, he can't play until after his CHL season is over, Boucher did this last year.
It just prevents NHL teams from stealing CHL players and playing them in the AHL. |

The CHL (which includes QMJHL, OHL, WHL) is the only league that restricts its players from playing in the AHL. I don't know how those restrictions apply to Matteau however. |

Worst excuse ever.
Wouldn't it be funny if that 4th rounder turned into the next Parise? |

Well, it's not like we traded two first round picks for him so I don't think that'll be very likely. |

Because Parise needed to be resigned and Lou couldn't take ten minutes out of his day to call Poni's agent because Lou was playing Zach's skin flute. |

It wouldn't matter to the Devils. Drafting in the later rounds is not like the first 5 picks where it is more obvious who goes where. In the 4th round if they get the next Parise it is because they have done some good scouting. If the Devils were in that position, would they have picked the same player? No. |

I don't get what all the fuss is about.

That fourth could have been used along with Tallinder to net a 6th rounder. Much safer trade. |

The Leafs are in 5th instead of last so that means the ruffians come out of the wood work. |

That's not what happened, if Parise resigned, then they wouldn't have resigned Poni. So they didn't offer Poni a contract during the whole Parise saga. During that time he jumped on an offer from Winnipeg. Parise hit the lotto, and by that time Poni was already off the market. |

And wouldn't it be even funnier if a division rival used two of Torontos picks to draft a potential franchise forward and potential top pairing defenseman? Oh, right. |
