i miss being back in calgary and being able to listen to the fan. need me some calagry updates!
that being said for the last 4+ years flames management and some fans (sutter then feaster) have been saying the same thing, "we are a few pieces away" or "we can win the cup if we play tough to play against hockey". meanwhile dregger and numerous other hockey "insiders" and other fans have been saying the same thing, dump and rebuild. Well for years now they, the "insiders" and other fans, have been right.
Please tell me, out of all the power house teams out there, how many of them could Calgary compete with for a 7 game series? let alone a long playoffs... id say probably none.
The mantra that we ride kipper, or expect him to win alot of games for us, is completely wrong. No question you want to have a great goaltender, but you want the workload to be equally distributed. By workload i mean the 60 min game. kipper should not be expected to steal 40% of the games you play a year. When management realizes that the goalie is winning a huge amount of the games for the team they should recognize that something is flawed within the team itself. Something that i think feaster has realized but because of the stale ownership group/ president we dont see any changes.
The flames are a marketing/business 1st team imo. if they werent, alot of the old marquee players would be gone by now and we would have probably seen a better team 3 years ago. But they chose to work a goalie into the ground, because hes popular in calagry and he can steal 15 wins, and they chose to keep one of the better RW in the game when his value was at its highest, because the backlash would be insane and for the fear of lost ticket sales. Soo (frank)ing stupid! If the flames traded iggy away 3 years ago he would have fetched double what boston got for thorton in that trade, imo. Saku koivu was god in mtl, but business is business and he had to go. Both sides are better off becuase of it. same could be said with iggy....
I can understand that because the flames in its history has made some of the worst trades ever, it would be reluctant to trading away iggy or kipper, but this is hockey and that poop happens. ( think mcdonnagh and gomez... eeeekkkkk)
you have to do whats best for the team, not whats always best for the "image" or because you may lose a few fans in the process.
When i look from the bottom up, and ill quote dregger, there are way to many bandaids on this team. Hartley and Gelinas are alright, but there are no winners at all backing the players! Where are some cup winners, alumni or ex players to help with player development? (not talking about J.F specail assistant in conroy)

looks like a real boring bunch
This is a team game, not a few individuals that are good, and some filler. you wont win with that attitude, and you see it happening with the oilers. They have some great players, just to much filler and no substance. they will be in the same place as the caps are if they dont bring in some people to help this raw team. the same can be said for the flames.
The habs i think are the best example of what a good management and coaching/trainings staff can do for a team. (add in the flames need to trade away some players, but it could work for them too)
last year was one of the worst in habs history; a gm that didnt care, who traded players mid game, fired a coach b4 a game; a coach that penalized rookies for making mistakes by benching them, but kept vets that played like crap, playing and then add injuries. No one wanted to play for the coaching staff, or for the sweater, the team was a complete mess. It was (frank)ing embarrassing! i mean when bourque arrived in montreal, there was no one from the habs management to pick him up and welcome him to the team. Sooo bad!
ffwd to this year, new coaching staff filled with ex players and vets, and a play as a team die as a team mantra. This is almost the same team that failed last year, and now this year they are winning and are playing with a completely new attitude.
my point is, if the flames management could move past the iggy/04 years and give hartley some new YOUNG, talent plus some more insulation in the front office and player development, this team will look more like a contender and less like a team that ices players to collect a big paycheck at the end of each month becasue they know the fans are ok with average. KK has to go!!!!
a few months back a flames fan posted that he was ok with keeping the team like it was aas long as they kept him entertained. Management has been feeding of those type of fans for way to long! This team needs to be consistant and needs to win. Its getting to be very embarrassing all the excuses and thoughts going into should we or shouldnt we trade some of the "roses" the flames currently have.
Man ..... this was way to long sorry, what would be rad is if we could have a skype option. call it bar mode; same as it would be at a bar, a bunch of random people talking hockey, but form coast to coast enjoying a beer and a doob from the comfort of your own home. (frank) i love this game!!!!!!

Nice writeup man, alot of passion in there.
What the cool aid is telling us in Calgary (since you are far away) is that Feaster is rebuilding while staying competitive. He let the Joke, Bourque, Regehr, Moss, Langkow, all leave and picked up Cervenka, Hudler, Wideman. Really, the whole rebuilding thing that people get excited about revolves around trading Iginla and Kipper.
Really, I feel that we shold trade Kipper, keep Iginla as our "Selane". |

The way Iggy's playing right now, I'd honestly rather trade him. If he'd play with half the passion of our Montreal friend up there then I'd sing a different tune, but he just looks uninterested right now. |

Keep in mind it's only 10 games. Shortened season aside the first 10 games of any year I believe haven't been good for Iggy.
Iggy gets 2 tonight.

1) Iginla has terrible trade value, and it isn't worth it. Anyone thinking they get more than a 2nd or 3rd rder now, with the way he is playing, is smoking crack. Plus, it is only 10 games into the season. Panic button...maybe in 2 weeks, not now.
2) I miss Kipper Glad they are being cautious though. |

I think the opposite, but Kipper's trade value is higher than Iginla once he comes back from IR. I'd rather neither leave. |

Ahhh, Iggy starts like this every season. Plus, I have a feeling he's still dealing with that groin issue that kept him out of the mini camp. Let him get hot, then deal him and we'll get something good back. |

That's fine. Even if he goes on a tear, he is a UFA and ppl will compare him to a rental. The comparable would be the Tkachuk trade. Yes, it netted a 3rd/4th liner (Metropolit) and a 1st/3rd. I'd take away one of those picks if he is coming hot, and the player and 1st if cold.

Also, does Irving remind anyone of Kipper just a wee bit? Stops for the water bottle after every play, short, low center of gravity, quick post to post....raw, definitely. In a cpl yrs, I am not so sure that we couldn't count on him as a future #1 in battle with Ramo. He looks like he has picked up a thing or two from Kip. |
