You need to realize that before this season, JVR was under performing, not being physical and was as inconsistent as they come. Now, he's playing great, but nothing in his past suggest it will last.

I'd be cautiously optimistic in his case.

Yes the very extensive NHL past that he has.

A young guy who had a good season, automatically gonna be fawned on by lots of people, who'll then want to overpay for the guy.

1 decent offensive season isn't worth the adoration he's getting, IMO. Give a guy primary offensive duty, and he's gonna rack up assists. Doesn't mean he's going to be a 1st line center. He was drafted to be an awesome 3rd line C, and that's probably what he's going to become.

Maybe. I haven't watched a lot of Avs games, I do have a friend who is a die-hard Avs fan and he loves the guy and raves about how good he's going to be. Maybe he's just wrong and he'll regress into a 3rd line type guy. If that's a risk then I definitely wouldn't be throwing first rounders and top prospects at him but if we can get him with what we have a surplus of (i.e. roster/prospect dmen, roster wingers) it may be a good risk/reward situation.

Worse come to worse you get a Bozak clone (a 3rd liner who can chip in more when playing in a first line role). Best case scenario you get a young legit #1 centre who can anchor your first line.

Mid-to-late first and a decent(not grade-A) prospect? Ok. You know he's an NHLer, you know he can pich in on the to line if needed, and you know as a strong defensive centre, he's always going to be useful. He's basically a better-in-every way version of Bozak.

But when you start talking about multiple firsts, and top prospects... Bad idea.
