actually if you finished 9th you have a chance this year......may be 1% but still a chance
- Homer

We had one of the best chances in the Crosby draft too and look what that got us.

Im torn on it....I know guys who have and do play in the league....some say its teh worst stat in hockey, others think it legit, honest stat.
- Homer

I look at it as both honestly

A bad team is going to have a lot of guys in the minus, some of which are still good players...
The reverse is also true
There are poor defensemen on good teams who have a nice looking +/- but aren't necessarily defensively responsible

When I see a guy that's played on a bad team and has respectable +/- stats, it tells me he's probably pretty good, just stuck in a bad situation

If any of that makes sense?

They're trying to just ease him in. He's playing in a league full of 20+ year olds. He's a baby compared to them. It's all about the learning curve for him.
- HonkFortheGoose

That's what I figured
He needs to develop more as a scorer as well
Bringing him up too early will prob result in him being more like gaustad than a 25-30 goal guy

Decades? You don't think that Briere or Drury could be considered franchise centers?

I wish we had been able to keep one of them longer, but they weren't exactly terrible.

Nothing I've seen/heard about MacKinnon has made me jump for joy over him. However, the opposite could be said about Jones. He came out at the beginning of the tournament and basically had a "Messier Moment" by saying the thought the USA was the best team in the tournament. That takes balls. He also played lights out and was instrumental in their success, while MacKinnon fell by the wayside and got outshined by Drouin on his own team.

Is that better?

- HonkFortheGoose

No, Drury and Briere were not franchise centers and Darcy didn't draft them. He had to poach other team's players that they scouted and drafted. Franchise centers areplayers you build a team around like Crosby, Stamkos, Toews, Malkin

And I respect your opinion that you would draft Seth Jones, but I wouldn't right now. I think the quickest route to a Stanley Cup is by drafting a legit franchise center. The Sabres also have Jake McCabe on the way, and if we are evaluating players solely on one WJC, he'll be a stud to add with Pysyk, McNabb and a better Myers

he should be dominating down there and he isnt, far from it.
- Homer

True
We gotta get a guy that can score on the wing w Grigorenko though
Other than Flynn, I don't really see any options as far as bringing someone up
Until Armia gets here anyways

This is exactly why I take Jones. They played absolutely fantastic together. If they can replicate that, then that's a very good pairing for years to come. Add to that the Pysyk/McNabb pairing and your top 4 dmen are set for a long time. That gives you plenty of other assets as well to make a trade for a guy that can be that #1 center. Even if it's trading guys to a team that's tanking and going to get a high pick.

11 guys in the draft this year that would go top3 most years

I've never seen this guy play but he has incredible stats so if the Sabres get one of the top 5 picks they might get immediate help to build with.

CraigJButton Portland Winterhawks' Nicolas Petan with 2 assists in 8-3 over Vancouver. Now has 40 goals & 100 points & an impressive +64. #2013NHLDraft

Hahaha
We've actually been very lucky in recent years with guys dropping to us
Besides Grigorenko,
Girgensons was projected top10 by many
Armia was seen as a def top10 guy who could go as high as 6-7
Catenacci was supposed to be a first rounder too
Pysyk slipped further down in the first then he was projected

I def get your frustration though

Top5?
You're getting carried away
Before the season he was looked at as a 3rd rounder
Even with this very good year, low first at best
Reason?
5'9, 165lbs

pysyk is an interesting case because it was definitely taking the best player available because they really wanted Riley Sheahan and he went to the wings instead.

maybe we lucked out...

He's really young though, someone will take him in the 1st bc he is really killing it this year... He's certainly got potential
Here's a good article on him from just a few days ago of you're interested

There's still time for Sheahan to grow up though
I do think Pysyk will be a solid defenseman in time
He seems to be one of those guys that is pretty good in all areas, but doesn't actually excell at any one particular aspect

Good 3rd pair guy at least, possible 2nd pair guy in time

assuming we don't trade anybody for other stuff:

tyler-mcnabb
ehrhoff-psysk
weber/mccabe-sekera

in 2 years or so could be pretty sweet

Ya, but by that time Miller either won't be here or could be on the decline, and that presents us with another big issue

Calgary, Chicago & Vancouver...
All in major cap trouble after this season
All have defense that we should IMO go after
I've thrown some names out there ppl like, some ppl don't... But all are better than what we have IMO

Find someone to play with Ehrhoff and someone to play with Myers,
And then roll a 3rd pair with some combo of McNabb, Weber and Sulzer and I really like our defense for next year

If I were dreaming...
Ehrhoff-SEABROOK
HAMHUIS-Myers

Seabrook is probably very unlikely at best

You dont pass on a franchise 1st line center... Worse comes to worse you have a coho or grigs or ennis play wing.

Drafting a center doesn't mean they are giving up on the guys we have now.
