I still don't have a good read on Holzer (just haven't seen him play enough) but looking at his stats, 20 points seems wildly optimistic.

I'd like to see our D have a bit more snarl to them. Schenn could hit, but he was never dirty.

Let's remove the welcome mat from the goal crease.

Fraser's doing that for sure. And he seems to be getting PK time as well... both good signs because it means Dion doesn't have to play 25-30 a night - which just isn't sustainable.

Personally, I wish the Leafs had not made the Aulie for Ashton deal. Not that I have anything against Ashton, I don't but Aulie played his best with Phaneuf and Phaneuf had his best stint in partnership with Aulie.

Well thats just dumb. You would take a 4th round pick for a 60pt player? A second is the least i would take for him, but ideally i would want a player in return who can contribute now.
- Arctic_AARDVARK

60 pts in his contract year... his play doesn't warrant much that season was mostly Grabo & Kuli carrying him on as a passenger.

In any game against tough teams like NYR, Philly, etc.. he disappears.. into his little corner... I would trade him for anything.. really.. and I was taking into account his one season.

I laughed when he said in an interview we stuck up for each other.. he always shy's away from that stuff with the rare exception he lost it on Spacek one night.

Sorry has 5 points rushes to the net well.. point shots are telegraphed and blocked.. can't clear the zone with no one pressuring.. gets caught down low out of position.. and makes it too easy to score in front of the net.

I don't like him at all.. but just my opinion.. for me he is worse than Kaberle.. and yet we gave up a high 2nd rounder for him.. was of a good pick
.

- DoctorNHL

that pick wound up in the hands of the Stars. They get a small forward who's not even ppg in the W.

Boston gave up that pick for Kaberle, we gave up that pick for Liles, Colorado gave up that pick for Varlamov, Washington gave up that pick for Ribiero.

That's a well travelled pick

at the time It actually made sense... Aulie was a bit blocked, and Ashton's game was really progressing...

Ashton looked horrible at time's for the leafs last year, but still needs to develop, wouldn't rule him out yet.

Liles has been good. Plays very well at both ends of the ice, moves the puck. 0 complaints.
- Feeling Glucky?

Agreed - Liles has been fine - I don't think he's been outstanding - almost cost a the Leafs a goal against on Saturday with a poorly timed pinch, but he could be readily replaced by Gunnarsson or Gardiner (in my opinion). Perfect time to move him, when he's playing okay and you can replace him effectively from within.

Also would result in a net freeing up of like 1.5M against the CAP.

Phaneuf always looks good with a shut-down dman beside him. It lets him truly play to his strengths.

He's learned to be far better defensively now, without a defense-first guy.

But with that new skill-set, and the safety net of a good defender by his side...

I get that forgot the players name but there was another big power forward type available at the time.. that was a project that Burke was interested in.. to go with Biggs.. can't remember his name tho and he was available for that second we had.

I personally like him more than Gunnar, and he's steadier defensively than Gardiner.

I'd like to keep him specifically to help out Gardiner, who pretty easily replaces Kostka in the line-up.

And Gunnar replaces Holzer/Fraser, depending on the night.

No problems.

Gunnar gets a bad rap.. he played with Phaneuf all last season who was never at home.. Gunnar is good defensively, clears the zone, and makes great passes out.. he is way higher on the list than Liles to me.. and he has been carrying a knock most of this season.

This is the thing, he's allowing those guys to develop longer in the AHL/CHL.

This is a good thing.

As we can see by Carlyle's good instructions.. having young guys in the NHL isn't a bad thing if you put them on with veterans and develop them properly... how many more seasons would you like to see Blacker in the AHL.. I thought he was ready last year.. was great at camp.. and had played well for the Marlies the year before.

I like both Liles and Gunnar, but the two cannot be paired together. That gets ugly fast.

He had 21 goals and 41 assists.. Thats not a passenger. I could easily argue that MacArthur was the reason for Kuli's breakout season. I agree he needs to play better starting tonight but don't give up on him just yet.

Keep in mind I've only seen clips, but in my humble opinion, Orr dropped his gloves too early.

I don't have a problem with him trying to pummel Gionta after Gionta gives him free dental work with his stick.

But Orr's gloves are off before Gionta hits him.

Many will disagree with me, but in my book Orr needs to keep his gloves on until Gionta hits him - then he can drop the gloves and commence pummelling.

But in any event, my point is this: to me a goon trying to pummel a captain is a much bigger incident than Grabbo biting Patches.

I'm just surprised by what became the topic of the day on Hockeybuzz. If I'm a Habs fan, I'd be much, much more pissed about what Orr did (right or wrong - two sides herre) than what Grabbo did.

you say that but when that scenario replays and its prust armstrong moen on the ice orr better have his gloves off quick... you dont want to get punched? dont have all 5 guys on the ice rush the goon... its not orrs fault that the guys that rushed him combine for a height of 5'0"

I think you are enamoured with his rushes at the net which he does really well.

Watch him tonight when he is on the ice.. his positioning isn't good, makes poor clearances, is weak in front of the net.. I guarantee you if you watch him directly for a few games you will see what I see.. he sticks out like a sore thumb, no matter who he is paired with.
