But the Flyers must have thought he was worth the price or they wouldn't have paid it.

Holmgren may believe his defense isn't that good so its worth overpaying for the only defenseman who is close to being a true #1 even at his age. He provides a lot for this team and they know what they have in him. I just have a different opinion then others. I like Timonen and glad he's here for another year.

I think they could easily get around $3mm, each.

I'll get slammed for this but in order to probably keep Giroux, Couturier, & Schenn it may cost them Read..........trade or otherwise.

Yeah that Read isn't a very useful player at all... He is so overrated!

At this point I'd keep Read before Schenn and Voracek.

Would you rather be in Det position? I think everybody would have like to sign him for less but that's not the present reality of the market. Bill made a great point, after the lockout, teams waived the concept of the hometown discount bye-bye

Detroit has won a Stanley Cup in the last 25 seasons.

I like Timonen glad he's here another year.

They could move Simmonds or Voracek to keep Read & the other 3.

True would age be a factor in this choice ?

The other good thing with Timonen, he's off the books when it's time to lock up Giroux, Couturier, Read and Schenn in summer of 2014.
- Jsaquella

I disagree with this line of thinking.

With cap management you should have rough dollar amounts slotted for each position. The money you are going to pay a #1 center should already be factored into you cap. Same with your #1 d-man.

My point is the money you are going to eventually (2014) pay Claude to be your #1 center should already be in your equation. Same as when you find the replacement for the #1 d-man on this team.

he is over paid in your point of view, not by the going market.

We'll see at the end of the year, and even next year, but at some point production > potential. You guys know I like Read, so I'm definitely in favor of keeping him. As I said a while back...he'll lead the team in goals this year.

I didn't say they'd do anything just a possibility.........Knowing Homer he'll try to find a way to keep them all.

I like Read over Schenn and Voracek. However, both those players are younger and still developing.

that has nothing to do with their current state of the defense......ask datsyuk or zetterberg if they shoul call it a career or their pursuit of another because they've won one in the past

You asked me about Detroit. The position they are in this year on defense isn't great but they have been very solid for years. They won titles and the Flyers have won absolutely nothing over the past 25 years. Not sure what your trying to say.

Jake is a hell of a passer... just can't score a goal to save his life! Read is the real deal. He does everything well!

For Jake to be worth his salary, which to me goes hand in hand with him being a top 6 forward he needs to do more than that.

He has been playing better definately. Needs to continue to use his size to protect the puck and buy more time for his line-mates. Not just give the puck away with low percentage plays.
