What appears extremely difficult for you to understand is that the role they are in matters. Phaneuf sucks as a #1 defender. But as a #3 guy, he doesn't. Might be able to pull off #2 if he had somebody good enough to cover for all his screw ups. Put Gunnarsson on for 25 minutes and he gets lost. Put him on the 2nd pairing, as the #4 guy and he's good. Give Schenn a coach who isn't an idiot like Ron Wilson and he can play 20 minutes a night with the right guidance. Hopefully this helps you piece it all together.

Phaneuf is being blatantly misused but he's a No.1 d-man. His PDO this season has been too low and it's only a matter of time. He has good possession stats for the competition he faces every game, too. What the Leafs need is an actual No.2 d-man to take some pressure off him. No d-man can do it alone, especially playing with an AHL journeyman in Kostka. I know they're trying Holzer now, but he's also a bottom-pairing d-man... it's such a glaring hole.
