Gunnarsson does just fine with or without Phaneuf.

I agree with you and all of them that he is in fact the best defenceman the Leafs have. But that says more about the defense than it does about him. Much like Bozak is the 1st line center by default, the same goes for Phaneuf. He's slightly less crap than everybody else. He is the cream of the crap.

But back to the original point. Gunnarsson doesn't need Phaneuf by his side to be effective. Gunnarsson is a capable defender on his own so long as he isn't paired with Komisarek.

And again, before you retort saying Gunnarsson is overrated by Leafs fans, I also agree. But Gunnarsson is good, just not as good or as valuable as some people think he is.
