Keeping Kessel depends on his contract demands IMO. If the contract is reasonable, it would be crazy to let him go. If it uses too much cap space, then see ya later. As of now, with Kessel we need 2 more top 6 forwards before we become a factor. Trading one away is stupid. Since aquiring one is almost impossible, we better hope we draft one, and Biggs or Colborne pans out.

It was a matinee game. Leafs lost 5-2.
- systemtool

That's not the matinee game I saw today. The game I watched, the Leafs won 11-4 & the Leaf captain set an NHL record with 10 points in a game. The Leaf captain had 6 goals & 4 assists.

Ohh wait, is today's date Feb 7 1976?

we just need a god damn #1 center.. And some better goaltending and we'll be set. Leafs have lots of wingers and guys who can step up.

Because it's Toronto and he probably doesn't want to be here, he's going to ask for big dough, money well beyond what he brings to the table - perimeter player, no grit, no leadership, no intangibles. Trade him.

1. Kessel
2. Lupul
3. van Reimsdyk
4. Grabo

MacArt, Bozie (awesome 3rd liner), Kulie, are not top 6 forwards. Hopefully Kadri turns out to be one, but isn't there yet. That leaves 2, and I'd like to see Kadri replace Grabo when he's ready.

I'm not a huge Kessel fan but we don't have him for grit or leadership. Yes he's perimeter, and 40 goals with Bozak as your center is a pretty good intagible.

Ah, don't worry about it. MLSE/Bell/Rogers will just take out another full page Toronto newspaper "I'm Sorry" ad in a few months, yadda yadda yadda.

if we are in a playoff spot when the trade deadline starts to approach..... kessel will stay. If we have no shot...... kessel is gone.

My opinion. Trade him for a solid prospect and draft pick. Preferably a center prospect.

I'd get rid of Phaneuf too. Doesn't score, doesn't hit anymore, doesn't play tough and his defense is mediocre. What part of that demands over 6 mill a year....... no clue

I can't believe all the excuses you guys make for Kessel
- Arctic_AARDVARK

No excuses are needed for Phil Kessel. He was 6th in the league last year at 24, so he is not going anywhere. Imagine him with a 1st line centre! Phil is the real deal, end of story. As for Seguin, call me when he finishes top 10 in the league scoring, never mind 4 straight years of 30 or more goals by the age of 24.

You could easily argue Kadri and Frattin deserve to be in the top 6. MacArthur is capable of putting up 60 pts, and although Kuli hasn't been producing as much as he's capable of, he still plays well enough defensively.

You're right. But when he gets into the next pay echelon (the 7 mil. area) that he will demand, he DOES need to be a player that brings more to the table. I'm simply saying he's not worth the money.

Next contract at 7 large, yeah, excuses would be needed. What he brings does not justify that kind of money.
