Not trolling but did you fellers see this?

Bill Daly tells Post via email that if Tim Thomas does not return to NHL, cap hit goes away after this season even if NYI toll the contract.

- DONMURDOCH14

yep it counts this year, so if he were tolled and played next year the hit cant count twice.. so next year his salary cap hit would be free.

What were they rebuilding and what were/are we rebuilding? Answer: they make a few big Free Agent purchases and sprinkle in developed projects who have been in their farm system.
We have been rebuilding our whole franchise, AHL and NHL without any free agent activity. That's a HUGE difference.

- keaner17

I totally get it, but then don't sell it to the fans as a 5 year rebuild, and 5 years later, the team around us are flying by.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but if you are correct, and DP is bought, assuming there are additional dumps made by the end of the season, wouldn't that force Wang to spend just to get to the floor next season?

You have to remember these kids are drafted @ 18 yrs old.

It's not like the NFL where they get drafted and make an impact right away.

Maybe they should wait until they are 20 yrs old... then we can move them directly to the big club or the AHL.

No more being trapped between the CHL and the NHL.

- jimmc7722

That would be a great idea. Would eliminate the college loophole too.

Just speculating is all. Even if he doesn't get bought out I still believe they will need to add salary.

Come on. The Preds were about five seconds from relocation. The team may have a rich owner (which I cannot confirm nor deny), but that doesn't mean the team has a lot of $$. Wang is a billionaire. See any of that $$ going into the team? NO! The owner's personal wealth has nothing to do with that of the corporation that owns the team.

You're missing the boat on this. A lack or revenue does not stop a team from being able to successfully evaluate players, draft them then develop them. A lack of $$ also doesn't prevent a savvy GM from making trades or from icing a competitive team. the Coyotes and Predators are shining examples of this. You can't possibly say that both of those franchises are in ideal situations which perpetuate their competitive status year in and year out.

- Jethro09

I had a nice long response to this and my computer crapped out!
For the Preds, they've had a successful franchise for years. Plenty of pieces there and yes one of their owners is one of the richest owners in hockey and they happen to have an ownership GROUP which dwarf's Charles Wang's reported $890 million net worth. The Predators report an operational cost of -$3.4 million annual while the Isles are at -$16.0m annual. BIG DIFFERENCE. It's also worth noting that the Predators were willing to match ANY offer for Webber, which they promptly did.

As for Phoenix, I wouldn't say they've been the model of success, despite having had a decent system in place for years now. While having a cinderella season last year, the previous four seasons consisted of 2 first round ejections and 2 missed playoff seasons.

Most likely, We are already above the floor without Thomas hit, we didnt need it to get there. So his contract is a moot point.
If DP were to get bought out we would have to replace that 4.5 million, But there are only like 11 guys signed through next year anyway.. so there will have to be ALOT of salary added next year with or without DP getting bought out.

I've still yet to see Garth ever actually say "5 year rebuild". Although it's the natural assumption in pro sports.
For the record, I don't think the rebuild has been a tremendous or even decent success, but I recognize the odd curve it faces comparably to other franchises 'rebuilds'. It's like comparing two buildings being rebuilt. Both five stories, one only needs the top 3 floors torn down and rebuilt, the other has to be razed to the foundation and rebuilt. They two can't really be compared at that point. Which was the root of this conversation, comparing the Rangers rebuild to ours simply is NOT comparable.

Maybe... I just don't know if Thomas is really interested in coming back.

And it wouldn't be @ no cost... it would be a second rounder!!!

- jimmc7722

I think his trade value at a deadline should equal that or close.

Not saying its easy.

Just saying that OUR 5 yr Rebuild is a failure.

I dont see how anyone can argue that point.

We are in the middle of the 5th yr and the team isnt very good.

- SCLI

I wouldn't call it a failure. What I would say is that the prediction was a gross underestimate of what needed to be done, considering:

- Milbury left worse than an expansion team in his wake- you know when you have an expansion team, and you can either suck for five years building a real team, or you can try and sign (or trade your draft picks for) a whole bunch of mediocre players to try to "make the playoffs" in one of the first couple of years of existence? Yeah, we were the latter....for about six years prior to Snow being hired. It's bad enough to have to paint the whole house, but if you have to clean the walls and throw out 3 dumpsters worth of garbage before you start painting, it can really slow down the process.

- Snow did not grasp the magnitude of difficulty there would be in terms of getting free agents to sign here, which is ridiculous, considering he played his home games in the rat-infested cesspool for a couple of years prior to being hired. It's like we all say- after you get TO Long Island, you tend to love Long Island. Before you get to Long Island, all you see is one of two ancient hotels, and a building that should have been bulldozed during the Clinton Administration. Add the losing to that, and it's no wonder this process is taking longer than he thought.

That said, his other problem, in my opinion, is that he has drafted/acquired FAR too many of the identical type- fast and smallish players who aren't tough along the glass. Then the guys he adds who bring toughness to the table largely can't play, and are useless in any other capacity. He has drafted FAR too many forwards, and not nearly enough defensemen. As I said, much as I think Strome is going to be a solid NHL player, he's more of the same aforementioned body type, and I really think he should have taken the opportunity to add a pick by moving down a spot or two for Hamilton, just for one example.

This team needs more emphasis on talented toughness and defense, both in terms of personnel and in terms of the coaching aspect of things- this would definitely speed up the process.

So....Larry Brooks needed someone to tell him that one year's salary doesn't hit the cap twice? I guess there are no math classes necessary in a Journalism curriculum...

Bottom line is we should be closer to the playoffs by now. Its becoming clear that we will finish bottom five once again. How many years can this happen until Snow realizes something needs to be done?

The farm system is in far better shape. The NHL product has not improved since Smyth left. That is what those who say the organization is not better off now than it was before the rebuild base their opinion on.

You have a lot of variables up there. I have been thinking about this today. Look at all the players the Isles have drafted since 2008. Of all those guys, how many really have high ceilings? JT, Nino, Strome, Poulin, Hamonic, Reinhart? I don't think you can say anyone else. It feels like most of the guys they've drafted are either busts or are going to top out as depth players. So yes, the organization is better off now, but not as better off as I'd expect it to be five years after a "rebuild" allegedly commenced and the team has picked in the neighborhood of sixty prospects during that time.

- Jethro09

well, now we're jumping into projection opinions which is a tough call. Personally, I'd throw Mayfield in there as I think he can be a top pairing dman. Both Nilsson and Kiskonen could be top tier goalies too. Brock Nelson could be a top six forward, perhaps. Bailey is in a 'prove it' year but I don't think we can necessarily remove him from that list. Kabanov is another kid with elite skill who just may be a late bloomer. So if we add those guys to the conversation, we're now up to 12 players with 'high ceilings'. You could potentially add Anders Lee and Matt Donnovan to that list as well, thougyh it's too early to call. So at that pont we're talking maybe 14. That means we're drafting nearly 3 high impact players per year. I'd venture the guess that rivals most NHL teams drafts.

As for the present state of the Isles, I do think we're better than we were in year one of the rebuild, but we also have a few major holes but building a successful club is a funny thing. you can go from a struggling joke to immediately valid with the acquisition of just 2-3 players. We still have yet to see the 2012-2013 Isles in their full capacity. I'll reserve judgement on them after a good dozen or so games from now.

The way the team has been playing. JT needs to carry his line. The second line is average minus KO and our defense is terrible.

Only the special teams. Five on five is the same it was last year and the year before. Now that the special teams are not doing well we are losing. The team needs to work on team defense. Bring in Torts after the Rangers fire him this season.

I didn't get to watch last nights game!!!

I still think something is up on the trade front.

With Vis here and his cap #... we were above the cap.

So there was no need to pick up Thomas...

I know most people will say nothing will happen... Garth doesn't make trades.

But we need to make a few changes. We need a true top 6 centre and winger.

Too many 3rd liners.

Bailey and KO are the two guys I would consider shipping out.

Of course... anybody can be traded, but it would depend on the return.

And of course.... nothing will happen if Wang doesn't free up some money for Garth.

If Wang doesn't expect to do anything before he moves and hopefully sells the team... then just leave it the way it is, and let the new owner spend money on FA.

I do believe a new arena, and new owner would attract FA's!!!

In the end... it's all on Wang!!!

His team... his money!!!

OK, really? He's reaching the floor with a player who is not playing. That is not indicative of a big trade coming our way no matter how you Snow birds try to doll it up. It's disgraceful and shows these two morons don't have any real ambition to win, unreal.
