DP makes $500k less/yr than Thomas.
Garth would pay someone MORE than Rick to NOT play. C'mon....that's simple economics 101...

- jmo16

No, he will pay Tim Thomas exactly zero dollars.

would they have actually been under the cap floor or is this to make sure they remain above the floor in the event of a trade? (or a dp buyout?)
- Isles_since_6

No, they were already almost $3m above the cap floor and I think that is without Bailey's $1.1m cap hit. This was to make sure they were above the floor in the event of a trade. Basically, there is going to be a fire sale if they are out of it at the deadline. I'd expect Streit, Nabokov and anyone else to go.

Ridiculously stupid, once again. Spend money and DRAFT PICKS on players that can help the team. "rebuilding"?
- Cptmjl

I gotta admit. My initial reaction was poor. The team doesn't give up a pick unless Thomas plays for them or a team the isles move his rights to. So if he sits out for remainder of contract, isles give up nothing. It's a salary floor move. Hey need to stay above it and Thomas' salary counts towards floor regardless of whether he reports or not. So, it's not such a bad trade. He'll never skate a game for the isles.

Fortunately, the Islanders won't have to give up that pick unless Thomas plays a game for the Islanders. I don't see that happening. Us Isles fans have calluses all over our nuts by now from getting kicked there repeatedly. We're numb to it.

If all the usual whining suspects on here paid attention to what this actually means, you would probably be thrilled because it is pretty indicative of Snow planning to make a significant trade at some point this year.

Silly me I thought Thomas was coming back and DP was leaving. I got caught in a dream world.

this is what my first thought was - likely that we were putting together a package for a player and that we may be moving more total salary to get someone back and needed to be able to stay above the floor.

It would be funny as hell if LV was traded before playing a game.

Let's see what Snow does. This should be a very busy deadline for the Isles with some of the kids having a real shot making the team next year. Chief you have to understand many fans are dying for Snow to make an impact move for a real player. Snow is not going to get the benefit of the doubt until he proves it.

Waiting to see what he does is perfectly fine. Screaming bloody murder about the trade before taking a second to stop and think about the bigger picture is stupid.

His agent already said Thomas is aware of the trade and the situation is still "status quo".

perfect, we can now move LV or Streit without going below the floor, or put together a package trade.

Yep. We don't have to be restricted to trades where we're taking a salary dump to stay above cap floor.

and it could allow them to waive a useless vet (or two) and bring up a couple of kids on lesser salaries to replace them. While initially I was confused at the trade, seeing the 2nd rounder only goes if Thomas reports (which isn't going to happen) then I don't see the problem. This does actually give them a lot more flexibility to make changes to the team and we all know they don't need the available cap space from the ceiling. With bonuses no longer counting against the cap, if they waived Reasoner and traded KO and LV (as an example only), they could bring up a couple of kids to replace them without being below the floor.

Interesting Snow. Now make your next move.

Snow should start dumping guys now. If they lose tonight that's three straight and could be the start of the yearly long losing streak.

I'd rather burn Reasoner at the stake than waive him. Just my personal preference.

It's all a possibility, which was the entire point of acquiring him. The situation gives us options and the freedom to make legitimate moves.

Two or three times now this game Boyes would have had real quality chances to score if he were faster. Still think Grabner or Ullstrom should be given a shot on the first line.

Oh yay a goal.
