Yup, if I were an opposing GM I wouldn't touch his contract unless my ass was on the line to make the playoffs this year. I'm betting that the GM who acquires him now likely won't be around for the latter years if his deal anyways. GM's do stupid things to save their well-paying jobs.
- Nucker101

I think its naive to think that GM's don't want this type of contract. Several NHL general managers have shown their desire to pay top players more money then the team/cap could allow by extending the length of the contract out beyond the anticipated playing years. I'm sure that Paul Holmgren is cognizant about what the team and payroll will look like five or ten years from now, but I doubt he's overly concerned. Do you think he would worry about the cap payback that another team would incur should Luongo retire early? Plus, as Vancity notes, Luongo's contract has two out clauses, I wonder how that is handled under the new CBA?

I agree that the contract is a factor anyone acquiring Lu would consider, but I don't believe it is a deal breaker for a team looking to improve in the near (5 year) term.

Luongo is clearly the starter right now in Vancouver

He plays more
He is paid more
He wins more
He's # 1

Call it is what it is

His Cap hit at 5.3 is lower than a lot of goalies that this year look over paid

Miller in Buufalo
Ward in Carolina
For two

So now what?
I really think Lu is both a great goalie and a good guy

If he had a three year contract he would be scooped up in a snap and the Canucks would receive something of value back

So my question
if Lu agreed to retire after three more years what happens to the contract and the cap hit?

Anybody know?

5.3 cap for an all-world goaltender is a (frank)ing bargain. And I'm not saying that because he my goalie.

Its the length of the contract and his advancing age thats at issue

his play has been good this year so you have to ask yourself why have their been no deals?

Gillis wants you to believe that he is weighing offers but he knows fellow GMs do not rat out their brethren and call him a liar publicly

but privately they are having an in the know chuckle, it wouldnt be the first time a GM pandered to his fan base

It is a good thing managers are not as dumb as some of these posters. See what happened to Pronger when he got too old for the game.

LTIR solves the contract term. In year 7 Lu will have concusion like symptoms . Deal with it.

Pronger had a lot of tough miles no doubt but he earned his alleged retirement but I think he comes back at some stage

The 5-7 year thing is a problem though because Lu is a competitor and he is gonna want to play but what will his play be like in 3 years at 36?

its a very valid concern

Luongo will compete to the age his body says no more. Enough . The GM of this team will have a plan or escape clause.

If the GM of this team went up to the owner and said I don't know whatr I am going to do with Lu's contract in 5 years ,then he would not be GM. I would bet they have about 15 different outs. That is why Burkie was willing to accept Lu's trade early on.

There will be no buy out , there will be an answer.

Leave the GMing to the people that actually know what they are talking about.

....Considering the consistency he's put forth since he broke into the league, I'd say he'll be playing similarly to how he is now. Also, like other posters have said, I suspect he'll get a knee injury training when he's 39 and continue to re-aggravate it until his contract is over

Near the beginning of the year last year Luongo stumbled and Schneider played five in a row posting stellar numbers. Was he considered the starter then? Schneider will put a string together of quality starts and everybody will quiet down.

We will see

At this point in time appears CS is on the bench wearing a Ball Hat
and Lu is clearly your starter

Wish the Hawks had two goalies of this stature

You're obviously trolling because if there is a text book case for a penalty shot, that was one. Hooked him right on the hands when he was on a clear break. Nice try though...

It has more to do with the Octane Crew.

There has got to be better looking girls somewhere up there.

Is that the Oilers cheerleaders? I wasn't too impressed - not a good showing for Deadmonton.

Holy (frank). Ignorance, and name calling to boot.

Corsi and rel Corsi are far more indicative of a players offensive and defensive ability.

+/- can be impacted by the linemates/players a player plays with.

An example. Frank Corrado before being traded to the Kitchener Rangers was a minus 3, since traded he is a plus 12.

Frank is not playing better hockey, he is now on a better team.

You call me an idiot. +/- is widely considered only important in certain contexts by pro scouts and major hockey pundits.

Do a bit of research before you start calling names...

Seriously, wow.

You need to understand that the Oilers have won 5 cups and are now poised to win another 5. That makes all of their fans hockey geniuses.

yea like that's going to happen

Our stars have No Trade Clauses and doubt they would waive them to play in those horrid Green and Blue Jerseys (didn't your Mother tell you they are colors that don't match)

I really think you can hold out for some up and coming prospects for Lu and I don't see CS even being on the market

After all Henrick and Danny boy aren't geeting any younger
The other market for Gillis is an UFA that someone can't sign before the dedline
We don't have any of those so Gillis won't likely be trading with the Hawks even though I suspect Chicago is one of very few teams Lu would waive his NTClause for.

Ryan Geltzlaf, Valtteri Filppula, Weiss, Derek Roy, Mike Ribeiro and Patrik Elias.
Seems Gillis is boxed in so maybe CS is available.

Depending on Kippers injury I throw out Iginla for Lou?? Just maybe

WTF, is this a fashion forum now?

Besides, I can't think of too many colours that go together better than green and blue.

I love the current Canucks jersey, but prefer the rink and stick logo

I guess you Hawks fans are pretty spoiled, with one of the best jerseys in all of sports...

Meh. It is what it is—a bit of a glimpse in to an old mentality. I don't think it's hurting anybody.

Do you find the Celtics and Fighting Irish logos racist?

Me neither. But shouldn't there be a bottle of Jameson's or a can of Guinness in there somewhere?
