I would take Yandle over Carle but thats just me. Once again I just feel the Flyers need an offensive defenseman (have a threat from the point).

They do need a threat from the point. No doubt.

Odds are Yandle not coming but he is an interesting name if available.

mark howe obvi the best in flyer history. man i miss that dude on the blue line.

Exactly, but that was the one time they had a guy who was legitimately one of the top 5 defensemen in the NHL. They had a good, solid group when they won the Stanley Cups, and in the years after they always maintained a solid group. When they missed the playoffs for the 5 year stretch, the main culprit was the defense corps, which was paper thin. As that got restocked, the team got back to being a contender.

I don't see an absolute need for that stud, bona fide Norris level guy, but if he's not around, you'd better have at least 4 or 5 very good guys that can be used in any situation. Even if you have that guy, you still need at least 3 other good guys that can handle a 20 minute a night workload

I think Yandle gets a bad wrap in his own end. He's not as bad as many think when playing in his own end. Is he great? Certainly not. He is good enough to get the job done IMO. He's been improving every year in his own end.

i recognize his puck moving and offensive ability, but matt carle is a better overall dman. i've also seen yandle get knocked off the puck too often for my liking. not trading schenn for that.

If they have a healthy Pronger and Timonen, I'd take Carle. With the current group, I think that a Yandle-Coburn pair gives you a legit, solid top pair, which allows Timonen-Schenn to settle in as a very soldi 2nd pair, and then Grossmann & Meszaros(if healthy) is a great third pair.

That said, I still don't overpay for Yandle. A guy like Erik Johnson would interest me a little more, just because he's better all around.

a durable crew, a couple of mashers, a couple of movers and at least one guy who can be a real threat from the point. if you have 5 guys who aren't an exposure risk w/ increased mins and a combo like listed above, you don't need outright stars...just the right mix.

I'm looking for an offensive threat who provides puck moving skills. The Flyers defenseman dont scare anyone from the point. They need a player who has some wheels and can move the puck easily out of the zone.

I'm more concerned with the puck movement than a threat from the point.

Johnson is interesting. He is signed pretty damn cheap as well.

I wonder if Vancouver will be looking to make more significant moves if they are knocked out again this season.

Bieksa comes to mind.

I'm a fan of Bieksa, just feel he'd be a little redundant.

I'd like to see them get through the injuries and remain in striking distance, an dthen we'll have a better idea of what is available and not.

Chicago, Phoenix, St Louis. Carolina has a couple of good young ones. Washington is in the mix, too with Carlson and Green

I think Coburn, Grossman and Schenn are very solid defensive d-men.

If you pair them with guys who are slightly more offensive minded and skilled you have great pairings. Meszaros fit in that plan for me but the injury questions sit strong with me. When healthy for an extended period of time he has shown he can be a monster.

If the Flyers keep Coburn, Grossman, Schenn and Mez imho they MAY need to bring in two d-men, and one of them being more of a top level guy.

This is where Guss comes into it for me. If he shows he can handle the NHL game, and shows he still has a higher ceiling then I think the bottom 5 for the Flyers are set. Would just need that "top guy", to fill out the D core.

yeah, give me a couple of zubovs, a couple of steady physical guys like regher and a streit and we might not challenge for a norris...just a stanley.

The other aspect to that is, an injury to that "stud" isn't crippling.

Look at Detroit now that Lidstrom is gone-they have some good players back there, but Lidstrom was so vital and so important that they're going to be adjusting for awhile to his absence

could be, but xtra mins for Gus and schenn would be problematic at this point. i'd be willing to show patience with the right mix.
