I'm talking about Cam Ward.
- ThePresident

Rory Boylen just did a great little blog on Ward and making a case against him. So hence my earlier doubts. On the opposite side, Ward has faced a poopload of shots since that cup win, go to espn and just go year to year and see the leaders in shots against, he's always up there despite only playing 65-68 games a year. Either way, I just like Ward.

Once again, you can not base a whole goalies work off of one playoff run. This happens all the time, goalies turn it up in the playoffs sometimes, but it was only that one time. That doesn't prove anything as far as overall talent. By your rationale, I guess JS Giguere is an all time great... Come on man, I guess Leighton's strong run for the flyers a few years ago was the mark of a top 10 goalie. Overall, Ward is mediocre, yes he had a good run in the playoffs that year, just as many other goaltenders, but generally he is not the type of goaltender to carry his team on his back year in and year out. Which is what a top 10 goaltender is capable of doing.
- ThePresident

Ward's one of the most consistent goalies in the game year after year, despite playing many years on a horrible team. The one year he had a decent team, he won the Conn Smyth, and the Cup

He's no where near mediocre, and for someone to say so is a pretty clear indication that you haven't seen him very much.

Also - JSG - 2000-2008, yes one of the best goalies in the league across that stretch when considering all categories.

Either Price or Ward. Ward has never really been given a shot but he's a money goalie. He has ice water in his veins when the game is on the line.
- Two_For_Truth

They both have that quality. I'm going to go with Price

Well then, that must explain why save %s, on average, have gone significantly up since the last lockout, right?

Don't know if this is true, but if it is, perhaps we are in an era of exceptional goaltending.

The game has gotten much faster than the old school, late 90's, clutch and grab traps, and yet there are some remarkable goaltenders.

Perhaps it is possible for Price to be outside the top 10 (at times) and still be a very good goalie. And let's not forget that, despite a wealth of great goalies out there, Price has proven he can put his name in the top 5.

I just don't think an "average" goalie could be nominated for a Vezina, even if he played out of his mind. An average goalie doesn't get his name thrown in the discussion of who should start for Canada's Olympic team.

But Ward has won it all and was the MVP while doing it. More experienced, more accomplished. Put a team Canada style defense in front of him as opposed to that rag tag excuse for a defense that the Hurricanes have and you'll see a big difference.

No, rebuttal here. I think both goaltenders are capable and... should ... win gold.

think it's whomever is playing best at the time. Agree with everything you said, but look at Brodeur in Vancouver... nobody better under pressure, but he was having a down year and it continued in the Olympics.

On the bigger ice, Canada isn't the same. Gold would be nice but it won't be easy. I think both goalies could get the job done and it could simply come down to who is hotter at the time the team is assembled. Or who is healthy.

Can you name the Hurricanes defense?

Put the best six Canadian defenders in front of him and see the difference.

But I don't think there is too much that separates the two. Both are great goalies, just think that Ward has more experience to fall back on if and when things get tough.

Who is #3?

Luongo? I think he's still got to be in the discussion for the starting goalie. I hate his contract, but damn, he's still a freakin' good goalie.

They should have stuck with Brodeur. If there's a goalie in the world who never has two bad games in a row under pressure, it's Brodeur. They took a huge risk by putting Luongo in net and they won in spite of that change, not because of it.

Ward wont be starting for Team Canada at the Olympics anytime soon unless he really turns it on in the season or two.
