entire 2nd PP has been brutal. 1st too. I think they just haven't had enough time to work on it in practise... which, sadly, won't change any time soon.
- Big_Lightnin

My point is, Liles is there to score points, lead the 2nd PP, skate and pass well. Sure he's been on defensively and has made some decent passes, but he has to do more, especially with Gardiner out of the lineup. Liles should be visible out there, he's not a shut-down defender...yet he's invisible out there, "just doing his job".

How has Liles been GOOD? He's an offensive defenseman....

Yeah, what can you say? We traded a prospect D-man for a prospect forward with size.

We traded from strength to address a weakness. Maybe it won't work out, but you can always go grab an Aulie type off the free agent scrap heap or fill the spot from the farm. He's a 5/6 d-man.

- Leeman4Gilmour

And you go always go grab another Carter from the scrap heap.
The trade was piontless IMO.

carlyle got his look at schenn late last year

if he thought he was worth keeping then i doubt burke pulls the trigger on that deal

- Dozzer

Obviously they thought the potential reward with JVR was higher than with Schenn... and if JVR can find a way to consistently put a strong effort forward, they're absolutely right.

Schenn, IMO is the safer option, but it is harder to find what JVR can potentially bring.

No agreement or disagreeing with my post, what is wrong with you people,

If no big fish is landed in UFA and if available, I would like to see Clarkson and Douglas Murray signed.

Yes. His poor play last year was bad for the team. Especially in contrast to his excellent play the 3 preceding seasons. But alas, short memories.
- Feeling Glucky?

Excellent play?? Wow dude, you have a low bar for achieving excellence.

What more could you expect from a guy making under 4M?

The schenn hate is so strong you guys can't see the point I'm making.

We don't have very many shut-down d-man options to play beside Phaneuf, who, it should be noted, plays his best hockey when he's got a defensive d-man backing him up, allowing him to play as a 4th forward.

- Feeling Glucky?

Not really. It's you that doesn't seem to get the response.

We get that you're trying to tell us that regardless of how great Schenn was playing, the role he was playing is now vacant.

The response, that you don't seem to follow is, he wasn't really filling it, and quite honestly, it doesn't seem any more vacant now than it did last year. As sad as it is, Komisarek has basically replaced him, and in fact, has played the role better than Schenn has.

the pros of keeping Schenn around were not based on his current game, because that was incredibly easily replaced. It was around his potential.

if this were a full season he would be on pace for 41 points

not sure how you deem that as not being offensive but c'est la vie

Aulie looked damn good beside Phaneuf, IMO

In in their limited play together, Schenn and Phaneuf did well together.

Both players(Schenn and Aulie) would look great in Carlyle's system.

I don't hate either trade, mind you... I just think it was dumb to trade both players without having a solid replacement in mind.

- Feeling Glucky?

I do agree with this completely.

Schenn may be the "safer" option in terms of you know he's probably going to be a 3rd/4th D man and not much else. JVR has way more upside, and even right now I think brings more to games than Schenn did. I always liked Schenn, so the blind hate argument doesn't work with me. I hope Schenn figures it out in Philly, but so far he's struggled just like he did for the Leafs last year.

no reason to buy out komisarek if the team is going with a youth movement.
he's playing just fine.
dropping him and then signing another lug for a couple mill makes no sense whatsoever.

now, if the money is needed to go against the aforementioned youth movement, but rather to sign big name talent like Getzlaf, then yeah, komi's money will be needed.

- Barx

It will be needed for sure. The cap is going back to 64.

We have Phaneuf,Liles,Gardiner on the books (About 11m and change) Gunnarsson,Franson,Fraser and Holzer need to be resigned. I'd like to look out and get a cheaper UFA for the bottom pairing.

Grabo 5.5,Kessel 5.4, Lupul 5.25

We also need to resign Kadri upfront. With the way he's playing he could give Nonis a headache with the negotiations. But I'm thinking a bridge contract. 2 year deal worth 4.5-5

If we want any shot at Getzlaf and Perry we'll need it. They'll most likely be getting 7-7.5 each

Liles/Gunnar has been the worst pairing all year.

I agree that Liles has been quite good, though. But that pairing needs to stop.

the aulie trade was unnecessary, i will give you that.
- Barx

Aulie is currently #6 on the Tampa Bay depth chart.

In other words, I don't care.

Komsarek can play a similar game to Schenn to be honest. Schenn has been brutal in Philly, have you seen any of his games? I take JVR over Schenn all day everyday, and that's nothing personal.
- blahman20

Haven't heard many Philly fans complain about him. Most have been happy. I haven't gotten around to watching them yet(been missing Leafs games, too), but I'm fairly certain Philly fans have been watching.

Wow four fluke points and all of a sudden he's been playing well. Watch his skating, watch his play at the point on the PP. He hasn't been good.

schenn was terrible last year

horrible even.

the scouting report is out on him and he's now very easy to beat..

he pinches too high in his own zone.. the forwards come in, chip it along the boards which effectively negate his strength, which is his physical play and simply out skate him to the puck and start their cycle down low.

schenn is basically an open gate for the opposition to gain the offensive zone. watch him play with that in mind, trust me, you will see it

the funny part is, I would have preferred to keep Aulie though.

I'm not worried about this. Of all the players in hockey, a defensive minded physical Dman is one of the cheaper, easier things to find.

I haven't watched him much, but the Flyers fans on Hockeybuzz seem to be pretty happy with his play so far.
