I heard Portland might be in the mix as well.

I think the Seattle thing is going to rest w/what happens to the nutSac Kings. if that sale gets approved to that ownership group, I think you'll see the Coyotes follow suit. There's talk of an arena deal, but nothing is happening without an NBA team going up there.

If you believe the Toronto Sun. Haven't seen a whisper of it in the Oregonian.

I think the next 9 games will tell us exactly where the Hawks stand in the big picture for needs

We play the Sharks 3 times in this stretch and the home stand includes
Sharks
Ducks
Sharks
Kings
Canucks
Sharks

After these game we can have the conversation because its all too early for trade talk

I can't believe there's as much discussion around here as there is regarding 4th line centers being the missing piece. I understand the need for a 4th line that contributes (NJD in last year's playoffs), but if there was a #2C, Bolland could do what he does best. If they had a guy who could put his fat a$$ in front of a goalie, the Hawks would get more garbage goals. Marty Reasoner is a nice player, but how much does he bring to the table?

There's still a long ways to go this season. From the West, I can see Colorado, Phoenix and Dallas missing out on the playoffs. I'm sure there are some trade options there. Like JJ said, Stan has to have the stones to make a trade. If you think O'Reilly/Weiss/etc are the missing piece, gotta pull the trigger.

- eburgio

Amen to that! Enough with this pretty goal crap. They need to grind them out too. Seems like every other good team has at least one beast that sits in our crease the entire game. While I didn't always like Buff's game, and his hands drove me nuts, I do miss that big body in front of the other team's goalie. I'm not saying I want him back, but something similar would suffice. Plus, he brings more of a physical presence, which they could also use.

I figured I'd have been better just asking you Beav .

This is my assumption of how they could spin that angle (let me know if I'm wrong with any of this): In Portland you have a fairly large metropolitan area, an arena in the Rose Garden can certainly house an NHL hockey franchise, Winterhawks owner Bill Gallacher could very well change his mind about owning an NHL franchise, and the fact that the Blazers generally sell a lot of tickets and there is genuine interest in the Winterhawks and hockey in general.

Good, but I can't see Bickell getting third line minutes over Shaw, not to mentioned what will happen when Carcillo gets back. I think Bickell (and maybe Frolik) would be included in a deal for Vermette, so at least the Yotes have a warm body for their lineup. Plus, Bickell would likely be in their price range when it comes to re-signing a player.

Shaw - Bolland - Stalberg
Carcillo - Kruger - Frolik

I think that's the first time Dylan Olsen's name has been mentioned on these boards since last Spring.

I've mentioned him a few times. Still have faith in him as a depth d call up if/when the need arises.

If the Hawks want to acquire anyone of substance, someone will have to go. Even with Olesz and maybe Montador buyouts, they'll have to find someone to get rid of (Bolland or Frolik).

Monty can't be bought out - contract has less than a $3MM cap hit.

My does that matter? He has about $5.5 million left on his deal over 2 years.

I expect Olesz and Monty will be bought out, unless they are still injured and they cannot be. Frolik could go in a deal for Vermette, as much as I like Frolik I'd do this deal. There would have to be more that Frolik included, but the Yotes would save about $1.4 million comparing Frolik to Vermette. We could include Bickell and a prospect in the deal, some of the $1.4 million could be used to re-sign Bickell. I know this deal won't happen, I'm just having some fun with some highly unlikely possibilities.

The problem I see is the size of the Rose Garden. For hockey the seating capacity is 17,500 give or take a few seats. I'm not all that convicted that Ptown would support a team with ticket prices only seen north of the border.

Doesn't anyone in the minors or LTIR not count towards the NHL cap? But a buyout does, as far I a know. So buying out Olesz or Montador doesn't make much sense if that's true (and if Montador can't come back and just stays on LTIR).

Each team is awarded two compliance buyouts as part of the CBA. The $ to pay them counts against the players share, but the cap is not affected.

And you can no longer stash contracts in the AHL, if I'm not mistaken

I'm pretty sure any AAV above $900k in the minors counts against the cap. I.e. Olesz has a $3.125 AAV. If he is stashed in the minors only $2.225 of the $3.125 counts towards the cap.

As for LTIR the most common thing people forget is that a team can only use that LTIR cap space DURING the season. What does this mean? Monty's $2.75 cap hit WILL count in the off-season if they can not buy him out. So if the League Cap is $64.3 million next season then the hawks have $61.55 million to work with until the 1st game of the 2013-14 season, when then can put Monty on LTIR again. Make sense?

Many here think Stanton is ahead of Olsen right now and i believe Stanton was the last cut at camp. He certainly deserves a shot. I like the fact that Olsen does have some NHL experience. Thought he looked pretty decent with us last year. Just a matter who management fancies if a vacancy comes up.

Unless rules changed w/the new CBA, during the offseason a team could be 10% over the cap. So at 64.3, a team can have a max cap of 70.7, but they would have to be cap compliant on Day 1 of the new season.

Were there any changes to this?

This may be a silly question, but is there a LTIR in the off season? Montador was placed on the injury reserve on January 19, 2013. If he was injured why wasn't he already in the LTIR?
