Noebels isn't the answer I don't think. I was at the Phantoms/Pens game last night and he didn't do much. The phantoms got shut out and they really didn't have much offensive punch.
I would love to see Iginla here but not for a prospect. The flyers have tried that method and it has ledt them very thin on prospects.

ive posted here several times about the opportunities that presented themselves to homer at the beginning of last season. the situation on d at that time and the amt of assets the flyers had made adding a dman at that time much more favorable. instead homer stood pat and rolled the dice with the ufa mkt and came up snake eyes. we all know our situation on D these days and you also know that i have nothing against the player himself. however, it's clear that homer has left us short of scoring on the wing and puck moving ability on d.

i posted last nite that we are down 4 top 6 pwr forwards from last yr and 2 of them, jagr and jvr, had the best hands and aren't coming back. instead, we are counting a lot on 2nd yr plyrs & guys that had career yrs. our only proven finisher is briere...all of these decisions are about cap utilization and asset mgmt and are interrelated.

i'm not going to get into a 20 pg back-and-forth about these issues. i just want to put my views out there so you can argue with me the next time homer squanders assets to make up for poor past decisions.

The problem is that you refuse to take into consideration that not every move works out. You don't always get the player you target in Free Agency. And you also lose sight of the fact that building a team is a process that doesn't happen overnight. Every team that has ever been successful, has put younger players in key spots and hoped that they grow into it. And justify drafting them and giving them those responsibilities. I've read time and again, your statements that the Flyers need to draft and develop young players. Now that they're trying to do that, you're balking at the situation and the inevitable growing pains that come with it.
The Flyers decided not to bring back a 40 year old player in Jagr. And instead chose to elevate the younger players to see what they have. And to gain experience. What is this team about, right now, or the future? So what was the problem with that? Nothing! It was and continues to be the right move.
As far as JVR, he's not a proven player. Neither is Luke Schenn. But for a team that last Season showed it had plenty of offense, and lacked a solid team defense. The GM decided to not re-sign Carle, and instead add a physical young defensive defenseman with promise. Now there is no doubt that adding Weber was tied to all of this. Well unfortunately, that plan did not work out. But the real problem is that you labeled the trade a bad trade, before a game was even played. Same way as you've labeled other players bad players. Before they even played a game.

When you trade a Carter and Richards for highly regarded prospects and high draft picks, you know what that involves. You lose a Pronger, you know what that involves. But were in the 2nd Season of that "retool" if you want to call it that. And you're already bailing on it, because of a slow start. I hope Holmgren is smarter then that, and stays the course.

And I'd really like to know what opportunities that presented themselves to Holmgren you're referring to?

Simply a purely speculative article written by Garrioch. Strictly from his perspective from the outside.

Read this earlier, and I don't put much stock in it. Especially when he says that Homer needs help in goal. How is the backup tender a priority for upgrade? We've generally been happy with Bryz? If he had watched games, he'd know that Bryz has been great. Also, our record is 2-6-1 huh.. Funny cause we haven`t yet played an OT game.

Noebels needs players to get him the puck. He's not a good skater but he does have good hands. When he uses his size to get to scoring areas, he scores.

Actually Garrioch does something a little different than other reporters. He team asks A about what is going on with team B. He does not necessarily get the big deals first. But, he is often the first one to spot the smoke.

I think the important statement here is the idea that Holmgren wants to do a big deal. In addition, it says he is happy with his goaltending but wants to add a back up.

Bruce Garrioch does have a bit of a habit of engaging in, Pre-Eklund, Incarcerated Bob & HockeyyInsiderr, what we'd call tossing poop at a wall to see what sticks.

Garrioch is the original rumor guy, he just has a MSM job. Given Holmgren's track record and aggressive nature it's easy to assume he's itching to pull the trigger. And honestly, he may well be ready to pull the trigger. Nobody is debating that.

What we debate is the need to make trades, as well as what is needed for now and the future.

I don't think that is the important statement at all. Holmgren will do the same as he always does. And that's if he feels a move will improve the team, he will do it. Regardless of what the teams record is. There is a big picture here.

Ya just got done reading that too... Why not throw in that the flyers are looking into Jay-Bo & Iginla for a terrible trade, then going by that guys theory we can fill 2 holes at once...

Garrioch and Panaccio are good friends. I bet they discussed Iginla to the Flyers and both got something for their columns. That's how it works.

Its not an excuse, however, refs had a part in some of our loses. This team just seems to be struggling right now. I'm not sure a "big move" wakes anyone up. You're down your leading goal scorer. Another winger. A solid dman. This team needs more than one or two guys. Unless homer somehow pulls the miracle trade and gets a star scoring winger and a star dman for Shelley and a second, this team is not winning a cup let alone making the playoffs. Schenn can go if it lands us the natural winger but coots goes nowhere. Ask malkin how good coots can be

I think you are exactly right in how Garrioch does it. I think he just checks out teams to see who they might be talking to. All the speculation is based on a telephone profiling of a GMs outgoing calls.

Able to count to five, Pitkänen realized he had a wide open path to pinch in

and i had my doubts about that...

that first shift was huge and i thought mcginn did a great job, silver lining with all these injuries is finding out he's capable of playing in the NHL

I understand the Flyers need scoring but I'm not a fan of a player whos 35 and makes $7M (cap hit wise). I would look elsewhere.

I doubt very seriously that Garrioch has any access to GM's phone calls. All he did was look at the Flyers early Season struggles, and their propensity to make big moves. And said hmm, let me write an article about the Flyers making a move. The feeling I get is that there was absolutely zero research and fact finding done to support the article.

Coburn is defensively streaky. He can be lights out defensively for multiple games at a time. Other times he can be mistake prone for extended stretches.

But on this team, he is arguably the club's most important defenseman after Timonen -- who is aging, ailing and a UFA after the season. So I'd be surprised if Coburn is going anywhere.

Due to the injury to Andrej Meszaros, Coburn has been saddled with Bruno Gervais as his defensive partner. Gervais looked fine in easier matchup while he was on the third pairing but, IMO, has been cringeworthy defensively since moving up a pairing to keep him away from Foster. Meanwhile, to keep the L/R balance and spread the "wealth" (such as it is), Grossmann has had to make due with Foster as his five-on-five partner.

That puts all the onus on a declining Timonen and Luke Schenn to be the "glue" pairing. Not a pretty picture at all.

- bmeltzer

gervais had a shift in the caps game that made me realize why my isles fan friend used to have so much rage towards bruno..
