The good news: The first of the "kids" in the pipeline are up and Drew Shore is a good one. Hell of a faceoff winner, good in front of the net and in puck battles, and fast. There is our 2nd line center of the future. Huberdeau is adjusting, he looked better last night, he will get his seasoning in this year. Michael caruso got some minutes pre-injury, looked very good at camp, we have a #4 D-man ready to go.

The 2nd good news: The older "kids" have some framework to support the next comers: Mueller has looked darn good and if he can stay injury free probably gets a longer term deal. he is only 24 years old. Skille has looked like a solid 3rd line winger, lots of speed and power, good on the PK and creating some rebound chances on opposing team's nets. Matthias has been getting better, could be a 3rd or 4th liner of some quality. Much maligned Ellerby came on pretty strong in the 3rd period last night, give him some more games, he had a nice burst of speed on a late rush last night and some good shots on goal.

Markstrom, Petrovic and Robak are playing well at San Antonio, as in Rheault. We will have Bjugstad, Knight, and Megan in the AHL by the end of the season.

The bad news:
its going to be a long year. And its going to likely be a long next year. The defense is awful. Kulikov is bad right now, Kuba awful, Weaver surprisingly bad, Jovo, oh god. Theodore has been on and off. Parros needs to retire. Versteeg and Weiss have been injured/bad when healthy. Kopecky has great hustle but is getting a step slow. Kovalev is terrible (as I predicted). Smithson has been decent.

So lets get a draft pick and see where the kids get us next season. In the meantime, enjoy watching the few pieces of good news play.

FYI, Florida has the best young core of prospects in the league, period.

Problem is they overachieved last year and scraped out a bunch of OTL points with bargain bin scrubs for forwards, and that made them look like a playoff team because the rest of their division underacheived.

This year, they'll regress, as Tampa will have a chokehold on the SE all season, and then after they get some development time in for their youth they'll be pushing Tampa for the division in a couple seasons.
