Or they could do that and not trade away the team.

They can have their cake and eat it too.

- Viktory

If this team can finish dead last without giving anybody up, that'd be great.

But unlikely.

fLets Tank were guaranteed a team like this

1995: Wade Redden (2nd overall)
1996: Jean-Pierre Dumont (3rd overall)
1997: Roberto Luongo (4th overall) & Eric Brewer (5th overall)
1998: Michael Rupp (9th overall)
1999: Tim Connolly (5th overall), Taylor Pyatt (8th overall), Branislav Mezei (10th overall), & Kristian Kudroc (28th overall)
2000: Rick DiPietro (1st overall) & Raffi Torres (5th overall)

- jribout

I've never understood how this tank bullpoop floats.

Has history supported it?

Pittsburgh? They were borderline bankrupt when they started to go down the toilet, weren't they?

Chicago? Toews and Kane.. How many other fundamental pieces of that championship team were top 5 picks? Cam barker?

Who else? La? Not unless hickey is the second top five pick.. Carolina? Who?

his brother scott gomez is in SJ, redden is in stl.
- wingz4life

SJ still undefeated BTW, and Panthers are still garbage.

so, to all those who thought Florida would be good this year, suck a bag of Richards. Team is too bad on paper to be any good at all.

Tanking to get a franchise player... Toews is a franchise player. So's Doughty. Staal. Pens have a few FFS...

Going as far back as 17 years ago to find some busts? Sad argument especially because the drafting process is getting better at finding and weeding out the busts.

Fact is, there are never guarantees but the odds are always going to be higher at 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. overall. If you want to list the busts at 2nd overall, why don't you compare them to the busts at 16th overall? Fact is, the higher you draft, the better your odds of finding a superstar to build around.

Do you actually pull up a chair every night.. Watch the leaf game, and lose your mind rooting for the opposition?

Just get Gionta to run Reimer again and Phaneuf to keep blasting slapshots at our players

That's exactly what it's based around. Teams like Pittsburgh, Chicago, their recent cups, their elite players and the fact that they'll be good FOR YEARS.

They reached the absolute bottom of the barrel before they reached the top.

TwoFor likes this idea. Nothing more. Doesn't mean it will work. He just wants to try it because he doesn't think the Leafs have explored this avenue. He also doesn't like the team's current direction.

End of story.

To suggest that any franchise as legitimately spent years of tanking to draft franchise players, and won Stanley cups from it.. Is (frank)ing ignorant, and stupid. Plain and simple.

History may provide you with two cases at the MOST, and good luck proving either of those resulted from intentional tanking.
